Had this horse nearly 5 years, never had an issue before, but the last couple of days, he’s had periods in the paddock when he’s really shaking his head around badly, rubbing his face on his legs, and quite obviously behaving like a head shaker. When I’ve gone to him, he’s got masses of black flies round his face, he does have a fly mask on though, but it doesn’t cover his nose. I’ve brought him in both days as it’s upsetting to see, and as soon as he’s in his stable, it stops. Is he now a head shaker proper? He’s at the vets tomorrow anyway for something else totally unrelated, so I’m obviously going to have a chat with the vet about it, but just wondered what others thoughts were please?

Black flies about at the the moment have my 2 shaking a fair bit. When the cooler nights arrive the flies will die-off and give horses some peace.

It’s a seasonal thing with mine, they dont head shake all year round, only when flies are bothering them. So not neurological/physiological head-shaking syndrome, purely due to seasonal flies.

If theyre really bad 24/7 affecting your horse, maybe try a fly repellant gel for the face aswell as the fly mask?
