My 16hh 4yrold ISH Gelding Has allways been very sensible and calm in his stable, and generaly keeps it fairly neat and tidy, but fr the last 2 nights i i have come up to the yard in the moring to find the corner that he (Allways) lies down in completely destroyed, the banks have collapsed and the shavings are everywhere, there are scraping marks on the wall, most are horizontal but a few vertical scrapes...
But also in the last 3 days a rat has made a nest in that corner.. i'm not suggesting the rat made this mess as it was definatly him but even though i've now removed the nest could it be that hes spooked at the rat and destroyed his bed?
hes a bombproof horse, but has also in the time that i've owned him (1 year) never been cast, and i cant think which is more likely.
Hes physicaly fine, just quite panicked and fidgety these last 2 mornings.
Do horses get scared of rats? or is it more likely that hes getting cast?
Thanks and sorry for the essay!

I would say he's been cast seeing as there are mark's on the wall and he is tense/wound up, which suggest to me he has scared himself trying to get up, does anyone live on the yard if so have they heard him banging in the night??

It sounds like cast to me hun. He's probably well used to the rat + rat family mooching round his stable at night so I doubt if it's that. What I would say though is keep a very close eye on your horse for the next week or so. If he did get cast it could be just that he settled down wrongly and struggled to get up again. But it could be that there was more to it than that. He may have had a bout of colic in the night - sadly I know of a case exactly like this and the outcome wasn't good. Fingers crossed x
