If I had a horse that won a condition class at showing I assume it was fat as the showing world tend to have their horses fat rather than fit.

Does he live out? He looks like his belly is full so maybe if he spent a coupls of days off grass a photo of him could look very different. My horse is fit but comes in from the field looking pregnant! (its a gelding too!) but if he spends a day inside his belly looks normal
 
If you really can't get it working they have it on DVD cos I have a copy! They'll post one out if you call them

He looks and sounds maybe a little on the chunky side, depending on what you are feeding some of that is likely to come off over winter anyway if you don't over-rug him, and feed for his workload

) you need to do a proper fat score as that is the best way to be sure

The lady who judged owns tb's so I think she would be the first to tell us if he was fat.

Yes he does live out, he doesn't like being in and it's chilled him out no end being out. Plus if he's in he has to have extra hay, and he insists on eating his straw if he finishes the hay

I didnt mean bring him in so he gets thin, I meant if you take a pic after they have been out at grass they can appear fatter than they actually are because they are full. So pictures can be deceiving.
 
This pic was taken after a ride, as I said he did look perfectly trim when being ridden but some people think he looks fat in this photo and some people don't. Shall try and get better pics tomorow on level ground
 
he his not obese but yes on the chubby side he could loose some want do him any harm but dont allow him to gain any more. i Pic from the back would give more idea tho.x

for some reason I take offence to that comment. I judge RC level showing for 3 different RC clubs/societies. I have judged many a Condition class and I cetainly dont place fat horses first. I take into account the age/workload and type of pony etc. I look at different aspects of the horse to make my decision as to the one that is in its best condition. My yearling was placed 4th at a qualifier show out of 14 on sunday and he is cetainly not fat!

However, although hard to tell from pictures as you cannot prod or poke the appropriate areas- I do think Toto as a little more covered than I would like to see personally. But he looks the native typ and they are hard to keep leaner- nevertheless, I would like maybe 25-50 kg off him.

Me too I'm afraid!! I think he could do with losing a bit, but he's not really overweight. Personally though, I'd rather a horse is slightly too slim than too fat as being overweight seriously ups their laminitis risk.

I have a cob(overweight and working on it) and a tb and 4 native ponies.
He is still overweight IMO

When I put photos of Bodey Cob on I got slagged for him being too fat, but he still manages to do XC rides pretty much all cantering, galloping, and do all my Novice dressage no problems at all. Let’s face it they are never going to be skinny minnies, it’s just like people, you can be fit and not a size 0! If he is healthy and doing everything you want him too then don’t worry.

The whole ‘fat or not fat’ issue is always going to be a highly debated one!
