Is he Fat?

No of course he isn't fat - he's a puppy!! He has ALL THAT SKIN to grow into. RR's are very solid dogs and you can see just how solid he is going to become.....and I mean solid and NOT fat.

Nice collar!
smile.gif
How are you doing?

Ah the beautiful Finn, no, I would never look at him in the street and think "OMG, that dog is gross!" he's lovely. I can't get over the size of him.
smile.gif

I think my Shepherd boy is thin, but the Vet says she'd rather see these larger breeds a little on the thin side when they are growing, she did say that he's growing too fast though! What am I meant to do? Stop feeding him?

Yes massive well that is compared to a greyhound

How can a puppys weight be stable anyway, they put some one and then have a growth spurt, go gangly for a while and then put weight back on and then grow.

Me thinks someone has been talking outta their ASS

Always difficult to tell from a photo, but I found a 'doggy' condition scoring link here

[/ QUOTE ]Your dog’s body condition is Ideal if;
Ribs felt but not visible
Waist observed behind ribs when viewed from above
Abdomen tucked up when viewed from side

Thanks - this is exactly how Finn is - I worry that you can see his 'waist' from above but won't up his feed - and this proves that I am right in not doing so!!!
smile.gif

I have heard that you do have to be careful that you don't overfeed puppies, especially the big breeds, as it can cause problems.

[/ QUOTE ]Yes agreed... I think I'll go with the vets advice.. she seems EXTREMELY happy with his condition!! Infact the vets and nurses all crowd round to admire the beast!! LOL!!
[ QUOTE ]
But I'm not a doggy expert so am not qualified to judge his condition!

[/ QUOTE ]Ahhh not qualified to judge, but capable of viewing your opinion, which was asked?!
tongue.gif

I think it difficult to judge condition anyways...

[ QUOTE ]
Looks absolutely fine to me. So long as he has a 'waist' and no excess rolls of fat around his neck worry not. I can see he has skin to fill and he looks in lovely condition.

[/ QUOTE ]Thank you - he defo has a waist but not too prominent!!
smile.gif

[ QUOTE ]
I think he looks perfect. He's got a nice tuck-up and good muscle definition. He'll get leaner when he's a grown boy. For now, let him enjoy the freedom to blub out a little bit
smile.gif

[/ QUOTE ]I am not going to 'adjust' his food... will keep as is for now... food suppliers (Winalot) recommend for a puppy his 'size' he should be getting 8 tins a day, however I am cureently feeding 6 tins with a few biscuits.

[ QUOTE ]
LMFAO!
If they think he is overweight they should see Danes at his age!!!
He looks fine to me hun.He should have a tiny bit of podge to help him through growth spurts(it turning into muscle is a myth.It cant, but it does give extra energy reserves while they build muscle) and he still has a far way to go- both up and out!

Your doing a great job with him, dont let anyone knock your confidence.

[/ QUOTE ]Thank you chick... I am so proud of my little man and am trying to do everything right for him... when someone is (and they were) so immediatley negative - it's not on
frown.gif

[ QUOTE ]
NO WAY!!!
I would honestly tell you if I thought otherwise as I think its completely pointless to lie!! But he looks perfect for his height and breed!!
I was really worried that my dog was underweight, people were even saying to me 'He looks very skinny,do you think you should feed him more?!' Obviously this really upset me, them basicly thinking I was neglecting my dog (if only they knew how spoilt he is!!) so when I next took him to the vet to have his jabs they weighed him-and guess what-he's just right!!! (if not a tiny bit too heavy)!! was reassured it was muscle!! but it put my mind at rest! I know this is the other end of the scale but thought i'd share my experience!!
Hope its sort of made you a bit happier about it!!

PMSL at growing to fast - I could NEVER understand that... like you say how can YOU control that?! keep him in a tank so he only grows to the size of his surroundings!?

Shepherd boy is looking fab BTW

Just being devil's advocate here, I suppose you have to ask yourself why the person made this comment. Were they just being spiteful or do you think they were trying to be constructive? Is it someone with lots of experience of raising large breed puppies? Perhaps you could go back to them and ask WHY they think he is overweight and get them to explain themselves more?

As I say he looks fine to me but then I am no expert - if you feel this person has a lot of experience you might find that you can learn things from them, even if you don't agree with everything they say. Obviously if you just feel they are a spiteful troll then best to ignore them!

Anywho... already PM'd the person in question am just waiting a response...

I don't think you need to worry k. To be honest I think, in that photo, he does look a teeny tad overweight, however, in a months time he will have grown into it and will probably be going through a gangly stage - such is the way puppies are.

After he is a year old it is safer to increase their exercise (as you know a growing large breed shouldn't get too much exercise in the first 12 months to allow their joints time to settle.) I am sure Finn is a very energetic fellow and his weight will be easy to adjust then. My local feed merchants ran out of Ki's normal feed on Sat and all I could get for him was the "lite" version (he was not impressed), I noticed a slight drop in weight in 2 days, he's now back on his normal grub and back to normal weight.

Out of curiosity, did you put his weight on the other forum? This may be what got the reaction rather than the photo. If you look up the breed standard it states that the desirable weight for adult males is 85lbs. I have even read on one website that a 120lb RR is obese. This, by my calcs, is just over 6 stone. so according to that, both mine and your dog, at 7 and 8 stone respectifully are heading towards obesity lol!!!

Don't worry about him, he's doing just fine!!

Oh poor Ki bless him!!!

He's not fat, he's just blinking huge, lol.
He looks fine to me, never heard of the term "puppy fat" if he is carrying a little excess (which it doesn't look like he is) he will lose it anyway if you carry on bringing him up properly. You obviously are doing a great job with him so far, he's fab!!

Thank you ... he is blinking huge!! LMAO!!

The breed 'ideal' is dogs standing between 25" - 27" full up.. he is only 27 weeks and stands at 26" ...

As has been mentioned before - Ridgies in S.Africa are like great danes.. me tinks he is going to resemble the true Ridgie of Rhodesia not the 'showing breed' spec type!!
tongue.gif

Oh no not her
grin.gif
Yep the picture shows some good old puppy fat................but not too bad, he looks happy and healthy.
I just re-homed a puppy RR and she was carrying a little excess weight, but she seemed to tire of excersise pretty quickly................maybe cos she was pretty well built more so than a smaller breed.
