My very good friend has a lovely 17.3 gelding hes 13 yr old and generally quite unless asked to be more forward. (dope on a rope kind) But she constantly thinks hes lame. He does often come out of his stable and look stiff, understandable such a large horse stables arnt that big, but hes out most of the day and ridden quite a lot during the week and weekend. Mainly hacking with some schooling. Oh hes a cob type in build. To me he just looks stiff always has done since she bought him late last year. But when ive ridden him its like nothing ive ridden b4 now whether its his size or just the way he moves but his back end seems to dip upon each stride in trot, totally differnt too the "normal trot" i get out of my horse. When i see him from behind ridden, the way ive explained it he looks like a childs wooden pull along toy with wobbly wheels you know the type with wheels that arnt level on each side. anyway, could it be a hip problem, cos she thinks hes lame in his back right or left leg, changes daily! lol ive told her now that she should get the vet out, as different people keep giving conflicting advice and tbh its dam annoying. So i suppose what im asking is if anyone has or had the same issues with a large horse, or perhaps could give some advice

oh also she found out i think after purchase that he had been left in a filed for a number of years after being used for hunting. No idea why but perhaps the above is the answer .

agree with amymay I would start with a vet to see if he is lame or not, then look at options. If it's not obvious it's easy to see things that aren't there or vice versa.

It could be some arthritic changes so the vet may suggest you give him a bute trial to see if that helps.

could she try leaving out 24/7 as he may benefit from being able to walk around all night if he does has some arthritis or he will stiffen up overnight.
