I have a rising 3 year old (he will be 3 on 6th December)
Does this make him an early 2011 foal or a late 2010 foal?
Just curios as to how it's worked out :)

Makes no odds to me. I know its unusual though. He was apparently "an accident" which would explain the odd timing. Best accident that ever happened as far as I'm concerned though :)

I thought this was only true with racehorses ? Due to restrictions of when the can and can't race ? I could be talking rubbish though!

It did used to be the case that this was only TBs (in this hemisphere) and everything else had a date in the summer (cant remember what off the top of my head but I have some books referencing it). I don't know when this seemingly changed but it definitely hasn't always been the case.
It's a handy date for competition entry purposes, but I certainly don't follow it apart from that.

I think unless for competition purposes. My horses will always turn another year older on their actual day of birth. They'll have an extra carrot in their dinner, and a birthday snog :)

My Girl's Birthday is between Xmas and New Year. I assume they were going for as very early foal and she came a few days early.

A friend on our yard always insists she is 10 already, but in my book she is still 9 until her birthday. I may change my mind once she gets old enough for veteran classes.
