My livery yard has just moved all the horses over to a new set of fields about a mile from the stables . I have only hacked out near there once before and today decided to go out along the bridleway that is just up and round the corner from the field.

My 4 yr old ISH Frankie is usually an angel to hack out with and is very sensible which is great as we usually hack alone. The girls from the yard had mentioned this house before which is next to the bridlepath - the owner apparently doesnt like horses going past and has attached plastic strips and bright orange bags to their fence to spook the horses , which did sound a bit mad.

Anyway we rode along the bridlepath track next to the house and Frankie didnt want to go past as all these bags are flapping and blowing in the wind but we get by and he gets lots of praise etc . We had a good long hack and on the way back we have to go past the house again and I cant believe it as we approach it - the owner has now put up a giant flappy kite attached to their caravan near the track. It must have been about 6 foot high with a huge eye painted on it . Horse had a complete panic , tried to bolt off though I managed to hold him back and was physically shaking in fear. After about 15 mins of persuasion I manage to ride though the field the other side of the track and up a bank to get back on the road. As I cross the field I look back and see the house owner watching us adn obviously having a good gloat that we couldnt pass his house.

Is he mad???? I mean he must have watched us ride past originally and would know we would come back (as our field is only round the corner) and then raced out to attach this kite to spook the horse! I am really angry as it could have ended up as a nasty accident if Frank had got any more out of hand. I dont want to stop riding along this track, as past the house there is great riding , grassy flat tracks etc and this is the only entrance.

Cookies and cake if you get this far

But what would you do? Avoid the area or keep trying to go past?

I'm sure if you rang the local police station or local councillor and explained that this guy is causing a problem someone with some authority could ask him to be a bit more sensible

It is not as though you ride through his garden or anything as the track is on farmland. I am going to try and persuade some of the girls on the yard to join me for hack past it on the weekend as this might help with my youngsters confidence etc - I dont want to give the guy the satisfaction of scaring us off.........

Why doesn't he like them? Is it the noise, the sight, something else...poop maybe?

I would have a word with the local BHS rep as they do bridlepaths and things and they may be able to point you in the direction of a council contact.

I wouldn't approach him yourself (in case you were considering it!) as he sounds really unreasonable and it could turn nasty...

The guy sounds like a complete idiot

but I'm afraid if all the 'things' are on his land, I think there's little you can do about it

As such, I would probably take to cutting everything down at night and/or dumping horse sh*t on his drive

I'm so mature!!!!

I would agree, contact the BHS bridleways officer & possibly the local council officer responsible for footpaths & bridleways. If you are using a legally defined right of way, you should have the right to do it safely.

Double check this route is definitely a bridleway.

Yes he obviously is a nutter so I suggest you contact Cambridgeshire Horse Watch, which is operated by the Police.

Only have their email:
horsewatch@cambs.pnn.police.uk

What is the YO doing about this situation?

Also agree with contacting the BHS, but do know that Cambs currently has a vacancy for the bridleways volunteer. Also contact the rights of way officer at your local council. The environmental health officer at the council may also be interested as this is clearly a health and safety issue.

As a last resort, try the Ramblers Association and tell them you think this man is trying to close the bridleway. I've got a good idea where they will try to shove the kite

Write down what happened and report to the police and the rights of way dept. If you do go out with other riders take a camera with with you. What this person is doing is dangerous. If the police or rights of way wont help get as much imformation and go to the local papers, and highlight what is happening. If they think they can get rid of riders by intimadating them they will continue to do so and somebody is going to get seriosly hurt or killed

speak to the council, and take photos for evidence. or you could get all your yard and horses there for a day and spend the time bomb proofing them. excellent practice as on a bridleway and you could all take picnics and make a day or two of it. that would surely piss him off as he is bound to come out, and you could have a spokesperson to politely explain what you are doing, but dont argue .
