Is it a big deal if the rider, rides barefoot around a paddock?

I am a child of the 70s. We rode hatless, in trainers (think we called them plimsolls), also bareback, on crazily busy roads. We, and our parents, didn't know any better. somehow we survived.
But I guess there must have been riders who didn't, otherwise things wouldn't have changed.
I would never, ever do it now or allow a child in my charge to take those risks. Think it's good to evolve into better practices.
No one wore a seatbelt then in a car. And drink driving wasn't considered that bad. It's important to move on to a more intelligent way of doing things.

Are you on facebook please read article about the 16yo girl who died last week in an accident on her own yard because she was hatless.

Not to wear a hat is extremely silly! Anything can happen, I suppose you have the NHS to patch you up!!

It can :( I was grooming my friend horse who was a total sweetheart however I took a short cut under her neck ( big horse ..lazy me) and got an almighty bang to the top of my head. Luckily I was wearing a hat but even with it on I saw stars and my knees almost buckled. The thought if being near a horse without my feet covered makes my toes cringe. Why take unnecessary risks ?

Think I just spewed a little.... yep ok. I get your point! I will wear boots lol. I suppose feeling like a wet seal is better than that happening. Ouch!!

on the ground trainers or something is fine - it just provides decent protection for your feet. For riding I came off wearing jod boots and chaps and severely broke and dislocated both ankles but didn't go through the skin (literally the skin was the only thing intact, all tendons/ligements were torn) and the doctors and paramedics all reckoned without proper boots on I;d have gone through the skin which would have caused big problems with infection etc and could have ended in me loosing my feet so proper boots are essential to ride

so,you break your body-it`s up to you. but
IMO it`s really selfish,if something awful (and preventable)happened ,say you became severely disabled, it would be a big burden on your family/loved ones who had to care for you and pick up the pieces.

Agree, If something bad happened, it affects the above & the moral at the stables too.....

There was an interesting article in H&H recently that said that you are AS likely to sustain a head injury by handling your horse from the ground as you are up top . . . you can look at that two ways: 1) Huh, the risk is no worse on him than off him, so I won't bother taking precautions to keep myself safe; and 2) Huh, horses are big, flightly, potentially dangerous critters, I'd better make sure I'm safe and wear appropriate equipment when I'm around them.

It's up to you, but I wouldn't be handling my boy without shoes on and I wouldn't be riding him without wearing a hat . . . he's an angel to lead and handle, can sometimes be a dope to sit on, but he's still a prey animal with an impressive flight reflex and weighs half a tonne - I value my limbs and head too much to be taking that kind of chance.

P

Not sure why youve linked to my post since i opened with riding and handling horses is a risk sport
