Is it a good idea to insure older horses?

My two horses are both over 25 and I have insurance for them, personal liability and external, accidental injury only.. I'm just thinking it would be wiser to put funds away for the for minor injuries as if it was something drastic I would think about maybe having them PTS. rather than putting them through any serious treatment.?

I stopped insuring my horses last year and just put money aside each month. I do however have 3rd party public liability cover for them all through my British Dressage membership.

They are all 18+ and at an age when I wouldn't put them through major surgery.

Thank you, I think it's best but was reluctant to cancel without giving it some thought.

I have BHS for public liability, but I believe the VHS also do it. I don’t think the insurance is in any way good value for money and would rather have an emergency credit card. Mine haven’t needed the vet for an external injury for a long time.

Harry Hall (& others) do policies which cover external injuries. I've got two on that policy so if they sliced open a leg I've got cover. Might be worth looking at for your oldies

I've also got my 2 on Harry Hall as they had too many exclusions to make most policies worthwhile. They were really easy to deal with and paid out when my girl kicked and cut her own leg, chipping the stump of her previously removed splint bone

I have my 25 year old TB insured with Harry Hall, just renewed it again. Up to £1,500 per external injury incident with no limits on claims made in the year and under £100 for the whole year. They were great when he managed to get severe lymphangitis following a small wound on a hind leg. They paid the full £1,500 back of a total £2,156 vet bill (that was 8 visits, numerous drugs and 2 different types of antibiotics). I have One Club membership for the public liability side of things. When he went over the veteran threshold age for Petplan, the same kind of cover I have with Harry Hall would of cost me 4 times the amount.

From World Horse Welfare you can get an external injury policy for about £150 per year. It covers multiple horses I think and you get £1500 per year to claim for. That also covers you for public liability.

I insured my old boy until 20yrs which I was very grateful for as he has an annular ligament surgery after which he had another 7 fabulous years of riding. However after that surgery his premiums went up significantly and he had a lot of exclusions so I stopped insuring completely.

I possibly should have continued with accident insurance as accidents are unpredictable but I think I probably saved or was at least even in costs. In seven years he had a trip with knee injury needing treatment, an abscess that lingered and his final vet bill for fracturing his pastern and euthanasia was circa £1000. He had developed uveitis the last two weeks of his life for which he was being treated but that wouldn’t have been covered by just accident insurance anyway.

I have an accident only/veteran type policy. It costs just over £300 this year and includes tack, personal accident and public liability. It saved me £90 on my BHS membership.

In the past 3 years I've made 2 claims, one for about £1500 so I'm ahead.

My 27yo is just insured for public liability with the BHS. I think it's around £5 a month. My 17yo ridden is covered for vets fees etc.

I just have BHS public liability for mine. My old girl is 30 and there is no way I would spend a lot on complicated stuff at her age.

Might sound stupid but how did it do that? Is it a policy with the BHS?

The policy included public liability. I cancelled my BHS membership otherwise I would have been doubling up. I wasn't using any other benefits so it saved me the £,90 that was about to be paid.

BHS Gold membership which is the one that includes public liability is £90 a year now.

Blimey, is it really? I’ve been doing a few of their courses, I like the public liability cover and also like to support the work they do…but that’s getting pricey compared to getting public liability elsewhere.

It seemed to creep up till it was almost double than when I joined. I don't think it's a cost effective way to take out public liability unless you're taking advantage of other benefits.
