to ask the vet who performed an operation (I think it may have been a Hobday or tie-back)on my horse before I bought him about the operation? It was while the horse was in the ownership of his breeder, and the horse has had 2 owners and now me since the breeder sold him (out of training)? Or are vets, like doctors, not allowed to give information on previous clients horses?
 
They would require the owners permission to discuss any treatment given, no reason to not try and find out more, if you want to contact the previous owner they should have no reason to withhold any info.
 
It is very unlikely they will remember any details as they are becoming so routine within the NH world in particular a lot of trainers just get them done nowadays if they as much as suspect the horse needs one.
To be honest the trainer is likely to tell you more.

Thought it might be written on the owners card or something! But I thought itd be cheeky to ask the vet. I got the breeders name off the passport, rang him and it was him who said my horse had had a wind operation, they felt it hadn't worked properly so they didn't keep him in training.
Im assuming a tie-back or hobday, but would like to know if I should take special care with feeding or something...

Your vet can tell you all that!
 
You mean my usual vet, popsdosh? Why would I want to contact him? If it was a straightforward op, theres no problem. Ive dealt with hobdayed horses before, when I used to exercise pt-pters (back in the days they had to hunt!). Its just that the breeder said it hadn't worked so I wondered what went wrong, and if there was anything special I should know. My vet wouldn't know that unless he got in contact with the vet who performed the op.
