Is it ever appropriate to ask for money?

It's bizarre and tacky to ask someone else to pay your vet bills. Presumably if they can afford to travel about doing the Shetland grand national then they're not short of money, I appreciate that circumstances can change but that's what insurance or savings are for.

There was a girl last year at a yard near me that did this exact thing (though her horse had done nothing to raise money previously) She posted online asking people to donate due to colic surgery which wasn't covered any longer by her insurance.

She then organised a tabletop sale, very much gave the impression that proceeds were to go to charity, then it turns out that about 95% of money raised went to her vets bill and only 5% to charity.

Needless to say, it put quite a few people's noses out of joint.

I generally find it quite distasteful. I'm a great believer in that if you can't afford to pay for an unexpected vets bill, you shouldn't really be keeping horses.

Obviously horrendous things like extreme colic surgery can't be helped however I do think that asking the general public isn't the answer.
