I have one rule for my sharer. That Ed wears his Hi-viz at all times when hacking out. Its such a small thing but I am trying to impress upon her that its absolutely non negotiable.

Do you think this is fair? I know to some people its annoying but to me its important and after all she can use Ed however she pleases and has a free rein, so I figure its not too much to ask..?

Would you mind?

Completely fair! And if they're sensible, they'll be happy to and wear their own Hi-Vis too. Especially as you give them a free rein as to all other pursuits, I'm sure most people wouldn't mind.

Completely unfair.
I mean, how would we ever get to trample pedestrians if they could spot us sneaking up on them?

I suppose thats true, I would really like her to, but don't want to come over like a overbearing owner.

Will ask her to wear it all, she's very good, so I'm sure she will, I just think she's not used to wearing it as she hasn't ridden for a while and in fairness I only really woke up to it in the past few years.

Of course it's fair! Your horse, your rules, and everyone's safer that way. I can't imagine a reason why it'd be a problem.

I am totally with you.
I absolutely wear high viz 100% time i ride out, come rain, wind or shine, summer or winter, i think it is necessary to wear it no matter what and frankly i do not understand why one would not apart from vanity. I think the same for people who ride push bikes and motorbikes too. It just makes such a huge difference and they say it gives drivers 3seconds, that is alot of time breaking.
Sorry, i appear to have ranted kitty, I am totally with you!

Yes that is very fair, we have a similar problem with the lady who hacks our stallion out, 1st she asked if we would get him a new saddle as his was uncomfortable for her even though its top of the range saddle, then she kept accidently on purpose forgetting to put his boots on because he fidgets when your putting them on and she couldnt be bothered, and then last weekend she asked if she could take his martingale off as she didnt see the point in it and she always gets in tangled up when tacking him up! I said well shel see the point in it when he passes some mares and throws his head up and breaks her nose!! Anyway mini rant over lol

More than fair. Have you not asked her yet? She's not said no has she?

The owners of my share horses have never asked me to wear hi viz, but i always do because it's just something everyone should. I'm sure she will understand completely if you expain.

Absolutely fair. If your horse is killed and the driver says 'it was a dull day. I didn't see him' What will your insurers say? Even if you win imagine the hassle because your sharer did not wear hi-viz? The trauma for you having your beloved injured or dead? Drivers have 2 sec more breaking distance.

Loads and loads of folk in France ride without a hat. No one rides with ME without a hat my rules. In return they get a quality horse and an enjoyable hack. I think that is a good deal.

Well I did think that but I didn't want to push the issue too much as I know its personal choice and all that.

Up to a point Kitsune - you are protecting the welfare and safety of your horse here though so you are absolutely not being unfair!

Explain nicely to her that research has proved a driver sees your horse 9 seconds sooner with hi vis than without, and that's enough to save her life.
My husband wears a hi vis jacket when hacking out and says it makes a huge difference to people slowing down.
I don't think you're being unreasonable at all.

Yes totally fair, it is your horse your rules. Same as insisting he wears boots or whatever. If she doesn't like it tell her your insurance is invalidated without it and that she can't hack if she isn't prepared to wear it.

It isn't exactly a hardship is it?? It doesn't even affect her really, just an extra 2 mins tacking up.

I'd say it's fair.
When I used to ride for some-one I insisted on decking the horse out with leg wraps and neck band, me with tabard and hat band.
Then if an accident did happen, a) the driver can't say he didn't see me, and b) I'd feel rotten enough about it but I'd hate for the owner to turn round and say well it could have been prevented if you'd had flourescents and then I'd feel even worse!

I have the same rule - if they are going on any track that may encounter vehicles (tractors etc) high viz must be worn if someone is riding my horses.

If they are just going down the small bridleway which has no vehicle access, then I don't wear it and don't expect others to.

I think this is fair - I expect my horses to be kept as safe as possible when ridden and so should others.

It's perfectly fair and very sensible.

Yes it is personal choice. It's your personal choice to have your horse visible to traffic at all times.
