Is it illegal to rasp your own horse's feet?

I've heard mixed answers on this. I've always thought you could get done for tampering with your horse's feet if you're unqualified but upon looking online it seems a lot of people "neaten" up their horse's feet and you can readily buy rasps etc on auction sites.

I know some people who rasp their horses that are barefoot (companions etc) when they chip their hooves in the field especially this time of year. Is that allowed?

I've always had the farrier but just wondered.

Not sure what I think to this article.

No.It is legal to the hooves of your own equine/s but it is illegal to touch those of equines belonging to other people.

no its not illegal, and neither is it brain surgery!

unless the horse has a chronic, severe,issue.....its actually fairly easy albeit hard on the back.

I can trim my own, and do touch ups between trim, but my back wont let me do 3 full size horses so i let a pro do it instead.

I have just started doing my own the trimmers been encouraging me for ages to start but I will still have him come even if nothing needs doing so I feel confident .
It's not rocket science .
But I have to work out how to stop rasping my arm .

I've been doing it for years, and still take the skin off the top of my left thumb from time to time... :o)

Rasping and trimming your own is fine. I've been doing my horses feet for over a year, of course i still get the farrier regularly, but its very useful to be able to tidy up her feet when needed. YO is a retired farrier and lends us his tripod, used to use an upturned bucket! Still manage to rasp my thumb and remove half my knuckles every time :')

It is currently legal in the UK for any person to trim any unshod horse and to charge money for doing it.

Raspng off bits of your own body is just part of the fun :D

then all barefoot trimmers would not be able to work.
I have also removed a shoe from somone's pony when it was an obvious danger and no farrier available.

It's legal to remove shoes. It's just not legal to put them on or prepare a foot for putting them on.
