What an offensive post! As others have said...different ideas and thoughts on how to enjoy a horse. What business is it of anyones what people do and what speed they go at anyway?!
 
I have my horses grazing near so many different horses in other fields and I also dont really tend to see anyone while out hacking or even when im down at my field feeding and brushing mine!! I know there are polo ponies one side and a pretty nice yard down the road....funnily enough though I spotted loads of people yesterday out on hack for the first time ever!! Ive been at my field for 5 yrs now....all their horses seem to be quite alert and alive while my chap just seems to stand there and stare at them.....

Im a happy hacker at the moment due to the fact I went into futher education last yr and I had to sell my trailer....although this year I am out at windsor great park fun ride and also another one the otherside of Oxford on the 20th April.....Im riding around with an 8 yr old - im 27 - nearly 28 (weep) as I cant find anyone else to ride out with really...!!

I tend to hack right up on the downs where I can get a good gallop and stunning views so its a little less boring and go past quite a few studs which I find really interesting, also go past andrew lloyd webbers house where polo practice is often happening....I ride out for about 4-6 hours at a time and I love it...If I could go to more events I would but I do tend to get very over excited and panic for weeks before hand so prob best I dont have a trailer for the moment otherwise I would never pass any of my assignments :0)
 
might be that their horses arent very fit as well...? Or people just like to take things slower after the mad rush of the week...some people are also quite nervous and tend to ride at a walk for a while before anything...I remember a friend of mine who hacked out for two years at a walk and trot and didnt canter for ages due to a bad fall.....
 
Starbucks, I can't believe you even care what other horse riders are doing. Some people like to go fast, others like to go slow. Some like to jump, others prefer to stay earthbound. It really doesn't matter. Just 'cos you are a brave lass who loves to charge around the countryside at full pelt doesn't mean that us slow, oldies are not having fun too my dear - lol

I'm a happy hacker too (both astride and aside!) but enjoy galloping and jumping out too. Unfortunately, this time of year, the gallops are mostly boggy so it's only road hacking for me until everything dries out.

I do put brushing boots on all four of Sen's legs when out hacking though to support them on the hard paved surfaces and because she she brushes too.
 
I enjoy cantering and galloping but will only do so on suitable ground, I probably walk more than I trot when out on a hack and we usually ride two abreast on the disused railway track that is our main off road hacking route, so I probably do fall into the slow horse person category. I want to keep my horse and I 'safe', I enjoy the odd fast ride when conditions are good and there's not many other people around but would soon get bored and probably have problems controlling my horse or pony if I rode this way every day.
The OP hunts and is probably 'braver' and knows her horse is capable of going places(at speed) where I'd be concerned about my horse slipping or getting injured etc (I tend to be over cautious

I don't find galloping my horse flat out over all sorts of ground and jumping all sorts of things enjoyable, but at least I can see how others would.

One man's meat is another man's poison is the saying, and you'd do well to try and have a bit more understanding.

The horse world isn't all about hunting and XC, there's so much variety and that's what makes it amazing - something for everyone.

I fall into the happy hacker/RC category, and I must admit I was a little offended at the implications of your posts, IE I am a crap rider, my cob is not as important as a TB, if I choose to put boots on him I am an idiot...

Ho hum.
 
Seems a shame that you feel the need to belittle other people who are just enjoying their horses. Why shouldnt they just go for a mooch if thats what they want. I find your attitude rather sad
 
I love going for a long hack on a sunny day; April and I just ambling along. It is a total stress buster for me. We go exploring and 'bond' hehe. I take food for us and will stop and have a mini picnic half way.
I also love going for hacks/chats with my friends and April gets to socialise with her horsey pals.
I think hacks like this are a good stress free time for April too if we have been going to lots of shows.

I also love going along our gallops or hacking to our canter areas and having a good blast but I only do this if she behaves as I hate horses that get foolish when they anticipate a 'canter area'.
Or I nip into the jumping field on the way home and laugh at no matter how tired April has pretended to be she will still prance like a loon and I need to spend another 10 mins working her in

ps I wear knee boots for roadwork. I saw some horrific pictures on here of an injury and I'd like to avoid this. April is a WBxTB and has chunky little legs but I'd still like to protect them

As April said I have to stress the importance of knee boots as hardly anyone seems to use them these days. My horse slipped one day for no real reason and cut both his knees really badly. He's never fallen so badly before or since so it wasn't due to his shoes or anything (he has always had tungsten nails), and I've had him for 11 years, hack him weekly etc. It took ages to heal. Since then I have always hacked him out in knee boots, plus he gets ridden in brushing boots.

I think previously (many years ago) the thinking was only horses that brushed should wear brushing boots, likewise over reach boots etc, but it is so easy for them to knock themselves and boots are such an easy precaution to take.

Personally I like hacking, we mainly walk with the odd canter in the woods ground permitting. I wouldn't say our hacks are particularly quiet as the old boy gets quite excited, but it makes a nice break from schooling.
 
I have to agree with you starbucks!!

I like to get out, have my horse striding out in an active walk, enjoy the time chatting to my friends (or my horse if i am alone!!), use the hills for some good fittening trotting etc etc etc, and most of the people that i see out riding and filing along with faces like wet weekends, with their horses looking like they havent seen any excitement in the last decade.

the local feed delivery man always comments how nice it is to see horse riders looking like they are actually enjoying themselves for once!

And for the record, Spooks is well behaved and in control at all times - I just like to get on with it!

my friends mare has them on the back as she catches her shoe with the opposite foot &amp; ends up pulling the shoe

we don't hack out all that often, but when we do it's usually just to have a chat, explore and chill out. If left to himself Flash has the slowest walk imaginable, and sometimes I just can't be bothered to keep nagging him to step out and go forwards

Was this a post designed to start a discussion? If so great. In My opinion however I dislike you attitude to these people around you, So what if they hack slowly, just walk, have their horses booted up?! Ok, fair enough have a moan about them, but please don't judge them.

[/ QUOTE ] When I go out hacking, I go out purely for the pleasure of being with the horse. If there so happens to be somewhere i can have a canter i will but I am more than happy to plod about.

I wouldnt call myself slow, I am just making the most of the little time i have to ride and the gorgeous surroundings i get to ride in!
 
Everyone to their own i suppose! Around by me there is a livery yard where the horses come out imaculately turned out, feet oiled etc.. they then ride around the block which takes about 20mins and go back! I personally, if i was stuck for time would go out on a muddy horse but put some decent work in.
