I've been looking at ads recently and my heart breaks when I see an ad where the horse is older (16yrs or older) and the reason for sale is 'to make way for youngster'. I appreciate that for financial or person reasons people need to sell horses but to sell a horse who has given years of hard work just because it's perceived to be past it seems very harsh to me. Maybe I just don't get it.

Me too. I hate it.

(I have one lovely mare at the moment but definitely want more and I wont ever sell them... They will all have a home for life)

me too, I can understand that no-one knows what the future may hold and money may suddenly become tight and financially the owner cannot afford two, but having said that, the value of an old horse (especially in todays market!) is nothing so why not loan out, so the owner can hold onto some control of it and ensure the best care is given etc etc????

I hate to think where my 16 yearold would end up - there is no chance of her going anywhere ! I would take on someones older horse tho - there is a girl on our yard who still rides her 18 yearold ODE's and everything gets placed every time and told off for going too fast round the xcountry ! look at Hedly Brittania a lot of horses are in their prime these days at 15

My old girl is 23 and still going strong, my eldest daughter's pony is "somewhere in her 20's". No one can honestly say how old she is, and my littlest rides a 19 year old shetland. They all have problems that come with age but are still enjoying life and being loved by two little girls. I do question why some people move on as well - I see people looking for hot competition prospects when all they do is hack and go to the odd local show.

Yep, i kept my older horse and bought a youngster, my older horse now a happy hacker and is loan (staying on same yard). She has the life of riley and i have time to spend with my big lad, it’s a win win situation.

I will keep lucy for the rest of her life even when she retires. She is nearly 20 and i have had her nearly 12years. I don't understand how someone could sell there old friend who has served them for so long. Maybe i'm just soft but even if i can't have another one at the some time lucy is staying with me to the end.

Well I have 3 16 year olds and they don't act it at all so I don't actually look at 16 as being old for a horse but I do understand what you are saying.

It annoys me to see horses in their 20s being sold on though, they always seem to be first ridden or lead reins & I just wonder how many kiddies they've taught, surely they've earned their retirement, though again, they may be full of life & the owner feels they may give have a lot left to give to someone else.
