I've got my new boy and I thought he'd like my old horses Neue Schule Starter bit as he is only young....

Nope!

Did the exact same as previous horse in the bit, held it out to one side and did not stop trying to move it around and remain uneasy in it.

Didn't even ride in it, so put a KK in and we were back to a normal, happy pony.

Only asking this as I know 3 friends horses who hold the Neue Schule bits funny in their mouth?

My mums Arab and Aunts Irish horse both love your straight happy mouths. Obviously many people despise these and when both my mum and Aunt rang Neue Schule for bitting advice, they typically gasped at what they're using at the moment and recommended the team up for the Arab and can't remember what for my Aunts horse.

Funnily enough, both hated it. The Arab wouldn't even move in it haha so back to the happy mouths for them.

Is it just a coincidence in my case that I now wouldn't entertain trying one? I'm sticking with the KK now anyway as he was quite fond of it... But enlighten me on your Neue Schule experience?

my 4yo did the same.
I had changed her from a HM link bit and she started doing that with the NS so put her back in the HM. She is now in an ordinary loose ring snaffle and going happily.

Wow this surprised me, have never heard of this before. Both my boys love the NS bits. Well, one will go in anything as long as its thin, but the other is a little more picky.
Interesting to know others experiences :)

My horse likes the NS, but I feel the same way about Mylers and people rave about those, I (and he) thought the Mylers we tried were awful.

I really dont like HMs though, too many sharp bits too fast, and dont think theyre safe, especially given the recalls.

Very strange! I had no luck with the myler bits on my old horse but I do know people that use the myler comfort and love it, so not quite as similar as my experience with the NS. But it must just be a coincidence :)

Never felt the need to try them, always had success with basic s/s bits & occasional use of a copper roller, & maybe the odd use of a sweet iron bit on one or two.

Well, mine loves his NS Verbindend. I say loves, he is happier in that then any other bit we have tried, and we have tried LOADS!

So much so, I bought him the Universal Verbindend after a while as brakes weren't that good doing faster work in the Loose Ring.

Oh? I thought it was very similar, my horse(s) hates Myler, other people love Myler, your horse hates NS, other people love NS.

At the end of the day they are all different and like different things, trial and error to find what suits.

I'm with you Capriole sorry dont' mean to gatecrash but feel exactly teh same about mylers and both my horses hate them! obviously i'm meant to have a boring normal priced bit, bit gutted as thought myler even looked nice lol but its horsey that matters so back to boring normal everyday bit lol

The myler wasn't a similar case for me as I know and have seen horses who go really well in the bits (and some that don't)...

But the Neue Schule, I found friends/family all seemed to have as much bad luck as me with them. Obviously they do work for people but was just a general question.

thats what Im saying, its exactly the same!

Ive never heard anyone not get on with NS before, everyone I know that uses one rates them, but I have heard negatives with Myler, you are just having the opposite experience!

One of mine wears a myler at home and a NS elevator to jump and loves them. One didn't really agree with the universal but I think it was the action of the bit was wrong and not really the fact it was a NS. The last one went crazy when I tried a NS I thought she was going to kill me but she is a witch and very fussy. I have since discovered jointed bits are a no go so she might be ok in a straight bar NS.

I've had three different NS bits on two different horses, and have loaned them out to others. Can't say as I've ever had anyone experience anything bad, though one of my horses doesn't like the beval style but goes lovely in the verbindend.

I tried the ns baucher on my mare, she seemed ok in it at first, nothing amazing though. I have also been trying a pelham (to use in the show ring) intermittently which she went well in (mullen mouth), then went back to the ns - she hated it. I've now got her in a loose ring straight bar happy mouth, a bit I bought for starting a filly we had, never imagining we'd get on with it as I usually prefer something with a bit of poll action (I have the wilkie in a HM) but for the first time ever we had a decent contact last night, a bit of flexion and she began to feel as if she was walking in to the bit. I couldn't believe it. I don't feel as scared to pick up a contact in it for some reason - she usually shoves her Arab nose in the air with any pressure.

So, as the loose ring straight bar HM is dressage legal, and that's what we'd like to try, then i'll stick with it for now. Might pop the NS baucher in at a later date to see what happens though.

I got the team up NS last year for my 4yr mare and she hated it!! She went around like a camel, mouth dripping with foam, had no brakes and was just in general very very unsettle!! Changed her to a KK ultra and she was as good as gold. Friends horse on the other hand loved the team up.
