Is it just me that is scared to go into field in the dark!

Now it is dark at 4.30 I am faced with leading 4 horses in from the field. Its not far but the stable lights don't light up the field. My problem is I am frightened of being trampled on by one of the horses as I lead them in. It is also a scrum at the gate as they all want to be first. Which order do I bring them in? Foal first? No she wouldn't like being on her own in the stable? Old retired horse then? No he creates a fuss if alone in his stable to. That leaves the 3 year old and the only ridden one who is 5 and the most sensible of the lot, so guess she will be either first or last. What do other people do at this time of the year. I do have a mountaineers headlamp but that tends to get the horses excited.

Does anyone check on them later? i worry because i bring mine in just before its dark, i have no lights at all. then thats it til next morning 7am. but, OH goes and checks them if I/'m getting bothered, like now,hes just finished his shift and work and is at the stables ,which are about a mile away from home, checking the horses are ok. If the stables and field were next to my house I'd just nip out at 9pm and check, but it means getting in the car an i hate going out once i'm in for the evening, its scarey.

The drive to/from my horse's stable is pretty scarey in the dark, and her yard is off of a fast B road, the yard itself is pretty well lit.

However, at the farm where my pony lives (200 acres-mostly deserted these days) a dog walker has just found a headless body of a woman though the police have told the local media there are no suspicious circumstances so God knows how the poor lady came to be there. We often find ourselves having to trek round looking for the horses as they have access to quite a lot of land (thankfully not field where body was found)

i dont like it .it scares me i dont watch scarey movies in the winter as it puts ideas in my mind about things lurking in my field. last year i was in my field n thought i seen a nasty thing in the bushes i maced it with my defence spray ,next morning i looked wher i thought the suspitious shadow was n guess what id maces a tree stump there it was coverd in red dye . i make sure im out the field by 5.30

Maginmelon - I know the feeling, at 32 and still sleep with the light on. After a lengthy power cut on friday sitting in the middle of nowhere with nothing but a candle which caused shadows so I thought they were ghosts! Ridiculous how your mind can run away with you!!

So glad I'm not the only one then! Power cuts are awful, what a horrid night you must have had! Tonight on doing the horses I was terrified by a gate swinging on its hinges - god that scared the hell out of me, I've never filled haynets quite so quickly in all my life! It was so windy tonight too which makes it so much worse as you can't hear where "the killer" or ghost (!) is coming from... I always carry the torch with me even when I'm at the yard with the lights on - as a weapon ;)
