like the title says, do people get more scared of riding when they get older, i have had my mare for 18 years and have never been scared of her.But last week she decided it would be fun to bronc on the road, when she stopped i got off, and led her to yard which was only a few yards away, then got back on her, and she was fine, but i havn't been on her since. ( i am having her back checked on tuesday).

in the past i have competed and hunted, was just wondering if other people get like this, or is it just me.( i am 43 next)

I got a new horse when I was 42 after having the same horse for 22 years, I do still have him. I know Hadleigh inside out and he knows me, I have never been scared on or off him. He was never a plod and being a tb quite sharp.
The new horse was a wb and, to begin with, a bit of a nutter. Yes quite frankly he made me apprehensive. I was always relieved when I got off him in one piece. So yes, I think as we get older we are less adaptable.

I think we are just more sensible and patient tbh! If you are having her back checked then what is the point of risking an injury for the sake of a few days? Maybe we have a better idea of the greater scheme of things! A few days not riding and waiting to know all is well or risk a serious injury? A few days is nothing in the great scheme of things LOL!

Get back on and get thrown off you could be off your horse for a lot longer.

I'm 36 and I do feel a lot more cautious with age - I shudder when i think of the things I used to do on horseback as a teenager! Funnily enough, I am 100 per cent confident on my mare but I dread the thought of getting on any other horse. Does anyone else have this problem?

I feel exactly the same as you, and I'm 43 next birthday too. It must be something to do with age. Maybe we just become more aware of danger. Cripes, when I think back to what I got up to when I was younger, on horseback, I feel positively ill. LOL! And if one of my children were to even suggest doing half of what I did - I kill 'em

Crikey you are all still babies!!!! I got my new boy in March and I am 54! Within 3 weeks he had cracked my ribs (ran me over leading him in - norty boy!) Have just had to have 3 months off as had an op on my hand and have been back in the saddle for 10 days (riding in company though) Tomorrow - eeeek! have got to ride out by myself!! Positive vibes for an old gal please!!!!!

I am 37 & a mum of 3 & I certainly don't have the confidence I had as a teenager, I don't know if it's being a mum or just getting older but the question 'How to do the school run with a broken limb?' often comes to mind!

Totally agree with this! Gone are the days of jumping old barrels, bare back with only a headcollar or galloping across the beach bareback, definitely too scared to do that now!

Think it must be, sadly!! My boy almost bucked me off at the weekend, schooling, and it shook me quite alot. Let my daughter ride him all week, but I idid hack him today and he was fine.I won't school him now unless I know someone is there just incase I do come off.... I don't bounce like I used to, so am quite firmly attached to the idea of remaining on his back!

yep! it's age!
people sometimes say it's having kids but I firmly believe it's age. we realize at some point ...
...we are not immortal,
...falling off hurts,
...time off work witrh a broken leg won't pay the bills to keep the house, never mind the horse,
...not quite so bouncy bendy as we used to be,
...school run, horse run!

Need i go on!
Please cheer me up with the positive side of horses and getting older.

While riding in the arena with my seven year old daughter the other day, she demonstrated her wonderful balance by crossing her ankles over the front of the saddle! I nearly fainted. All I could think was "if that bloody pony spooks.." Its a technique her riding instructor uses, so I can't argue!

I'm 42 and it's taken me 18 long months to get my jumping confidence back after a relatively minor fall (flew over his head when slammed on brakes and winded myself). He then did a tendon just as I was battling back to 2'6 and I felt if I didn't get another horse whilst he was resting I wouldn't ride again by the time he was better (if he ever will be). I'm now finally, and happily, jumping 2'9 again. Found some old rosettes a while back and on the back of one of them it says I was jumping 3'6! I have no recollection of ever doing that, and wouldn't fancy doing it now, so yes, it's definitely age related. It's so unfair!

Parlt age, partly the weight of our responsability.
I know although I am far from old at 27,knowing I have a husband and (very nearly

) 5 year old son makes me think twice about some horses.

Besides,it's a well known fact that you bounce before 21,after you break

have you had a c section? this leads to yellow belly!!!!!!!!!!!!! you can do this and you know you can.. ride forward with purpose!!! and enjoy. and take a stick to back your leg up and think young and no responsibilites. have fun! throw caution to the wind and ride forward!

Jeez!!!! I'm 60 and this winter I backing a welsh sec d. Yes we do get more sensible as we get older as We all remember getting bucked off, trampled on, flattened, bitten, stood on, jumped off. I still have a dent in my left thigh when my old Skewbald reared up and fell over backwards 30 years ago. But we learn with age and make better more sympathetic riders.

Yes its age
However I think it is also the longer you have been around horse the more horror stories you hear, and as you get older you are more likely to 'learn from other peoples mistakes' so we take more notice of what has happened

For me all that is made worse by badly breaking my ankle in January. I'm 44 and also have RA not too mention on warfarin so can't afford to fall or I could bleed to death HA and I still get on horses! I must be mad!!

Right now going thro the horror of trying to buy a horse and they are never as described so its dangerous to be honest!! Last time I was looking 7 years ago I got bucked off, bolted, reared on, all within 10 days SCARY!!! needless to say have been even more careful this time

Yup, its definitely an age thing.

A couple of weeks ago I stumbled over a photo of me as a teenager sitting on a little mare we bred. It was the 1st time she ever had a rider on board, I was sitting on with no saddle, no hat, in a concrete yard with a huge grin on my face and not a care in the world (friend took photo, my mum would have had a fit

)

I prefer to think of it as gaining sense with age, but would love to have that feeling of invincibility again!

I got back into horses after a break of about 15 years about 2 years ago. I was 45.
I was more cautious and very much more aware of the danger that horses can pose. I think though that it had more to do with being away from horses for so long rather than my advanced age.
Also I bought a green broke 14.1hh paint mare to bring on myself.
One thing I did was to buy a cheap western saddle although I only ride english because I felt more secure, while she was still very unbalanced.
And when it came to starting canter and she was putting in the odd buck it gave me much more confindence to ride forward and feel secure.
I definately was very aware of the possibility of breaking a hip at my age.
