Is it normal for a horse to hate rain this much?

Looks like a duvet day tomorrow according to the forecast - mine will all gallop from the field gate into the field shelters and stand there watching my kitchen door waiting to be brought back in! You wouldn’t think that the two older brood mares were born and bred on Dartmoor - they are the first inside when it starts to rain. They love their home comforts!

Mine is fine if she has a rug on. However, if she is naked and it rains, she has such a huff about it and marches to the gate with a cross face until I do something about it.

She is the same when ridden, if you pop a waterproof exercise sheet on, she is happy to be rained on but otherwise, no.

I had a Hanoverian mare who could forecast the weather better than the Met Office.
She'd refuse to enter the field without a rain sheet if she knew rain was coming. When stabled over night, She'd choose whether she wanted a rug on or not. Her stable rug was one that had no chest straps, so I'd hold it up and she put her head through if she wanted to wear it. Turning her head away was a definite no.

Just brought mine in - my Appy was walking backwards around the field! He hates the rain! He then rolled in the gateway whilst I was taking another in and he was waiting. ? he had two rugs on so wasn't wet or cold, he just isn't a fan. I was not getting up at 5am to get him in before it started though and in from last nught would have been a long time in so I bit the bullet and left him out for a few hours in it. He will be in for the rest of the day now anyway to his relief!

How handy!
