Is it normal for a horse to start doing really smelly farts?

My mare has started doing really smelly farts quite regularly. Her poo is slightly runny, but is definatly not dioreah, and her tummy is rumbling a bit. However it normally does rumble a little bit. She isn't displaying any colic symptoms and is happy to eat, drink and be lunged.

Do you think there could be a problem? Or maybe it's because we wormed her yesterday? Or because she moved back to the yard at Uni with me on Sunday (she has been here before for 10 weeks, she came home with me for 3 weeks for the easter hols).

Thoughts?

Thank you :)

Could be the grass coming through, my one horse has sensitive tummy and has had dark green poos just lately. He also seems to have a mad hour and misbehaves!
If you have changed yards your horse will need to adjust to diff grass and routine.

Hay,

Along with the other bloggers, yes the change in the spring grass can cause a change in the texture and smell of the horses droppings. Also when ever there is a change to the horses diet the gut has to change its break down process. Im sure it will settle down soon. Has there been any other changes to the horses diet as this can also play a factor.

Kind Regards

Hi,

It could be all the factors that you've mentioned. If she's just moved yards then stress can be a major factor and of course the lushous spring grass.
You can give her a little helping hand by feeding her a balancer (just a large handfull in her feed). This will also help to do around worming time as the wormers are so high in chemicals. Could suggest the herbal sort of wormers as an alternative. They also do a new worm plan where you get a worm count before worming and they recomend the correct dose for what your horse needs and for the type of season.
If she's less fussy with her feed try her on some natural bio yogurt in her feed which is alot cheaper. My chap did not appreciate this and went of in a mood lol. The other thing that might help with the farting and grumbling thing is to use Yea-Sac suppliment in her feed. This aids hind gut digestion (where the farts come from).

Hope this helps
