I have just taken back a 24yo 13.2hh mare from many years loan and she seems to be in season. (She belonged to my sister before and I have always had geldings personally so am a bit clueless about these things!).
So far I have kept her separate from my 2 geldings with non-electrified electric tape which they respect fine. Trouble is in the past few days she keeps going up to my 16.1hh WB gelding and basically trying to encourage him to mount her and he has been trying to reciprocate. Obviously this is not good so I have moved her away from the boys for now (she threw a huge tantrum over this)!
I would have thought that a gelding would not be that likely to respond given their "state" but perhaps I am wrong?! I think he was gelded at about the age of 5/6 and is now 13 so would have thought he would have got over it by now!!!
Is it normal for geldings to reciprocate like this?? My 32yo gelding is not at all interested (but that's probably an age thing I guess)???
Do mares eventually stop going into season?? She seems to have been exhibiting signs for a few weeks now, how long does this normally last??? I realise my boy is utterly gorgeous/irresistable but is there anything I can do to discourage her coming into season in future to try and keep the peace in my formerly perfect little set up!!!??
