Is it normal to be told at a livery your horse can't be out in the summer day time?

Just looked at a small family livery today and it seems very nice. Only 2 horses that the owners own and I was told the horses are turned out about 6 - 7pm in the summer? kept out all night then brought in.

Is this normal? The reason is they said the horse flies turned their horses a bit nutty. but mine is doing fine at the moment with a fly rug but I can't leave mine out. It isn't a choice, it has to be brought in with theirs?
 
It's normal for me to keep horses like that.
And on a small private yard I would except to comply with the normal routine if you don't like it find somewhere else .
 
Some yards do this others don't, mine basically live out in summer and only come in if really hot, bad flies or nasty wrleather.
Some yards like them in ever day regardless.
It might also be to save the grass.

Maybe you should ask of staying out is an option?
Your horse would be left alone though of they brought theirs in, so he have to be relaxed about that.
 
It's not really a livery yard though is it, it's a private yard where they would be willing to let you keep your horse if you fit in with their routine.

I keep mine at home and they have the same routine over the summer. IF I ever considered letting someone else keep a horse here, they would have to fit in with what mine do. It's my home, not a business :)
 
Some do like this and i'm guessing their winter is also v strict.


Other do: Can be 24hrs summer but in goodish winter brought in before 4.30 or 5.30 can't remember and in bad winter only out for a few hours.
 
As others have said it's not a livery yard with just 2 horses and it would probably be a pain to have different routines for a tiny setup like this. My yard has either option and all are in days in my block, the rest of the 30+ horses are out 24x7 or in nights.

Interesting, when it's a private yard like this, what's the tax situation anyone know? Would be classed as additional income so should be taxed and meet regulations on muck disposal etc. in reality, do they declare correctly?

Oh right... I am new to all this. I have only ever rented land with no stables. Just pasture. I never thought as it as their routine as I can come and go as I pleased so I would of thought I could bring in ad turn out my horse when I pleased ??

On a bigger DIY livery yard you would probably find that you could do as you pleased, but when its a small private yard it tends to be that your horse needs to fit in with what they do with their horses. If you want to be able to have your own routine, you probably need to be looking for a proper livery yard.

Agree with this, basically!

My horses are kept like this in the summer also, as one particularly hates the heat and the flies. We don't have liveries but if we did, they would have to fit in, or at least be 100% happy left out alone. However, the fact that they are kept in by day in summer does not mean they don't get turned out in winter as they do, just being kept in at nights when the weather is extremely wet.
 
Ours tend to stay in during the day- they keep cooler, and are much happier with less fuss about the flies.
 
Ours come in too, but we are in a midgey valley that is also over run with horse flies too. The horses further up the hill stay out and don't seem bothered so much.

OP perhaps you should look at bigger yards where you will have more flexibility?
 
I know of a couple of yards that do this- much more comfortable for the horses I'd imagine.

Ours are turned out 24/7 but mine comes in on the particularly humid days as he has sweet itch.

It's interesting as I thought my mare would hate it and prefer to be out but she too practically canters in and talks to me non stop as I approach. She's in on 18 hour soaked hay so it's not the food. She actually nods off before I'm done with chores so sub 30 minutes and she's counting zzzzzs
 
It used to happen at my old yard, even with fly rugs they used to go wild, one year they even had to install fly nets on the barn to keep the horse flies out. I would ask YO if you could take a suck it and see approach with your horse but yes, I've been at a yard where the horses couldn't cope with the number of horse flies.

Its normal here out in night time in in day time out the flies and heat
 
On such a small yard, you'd be very restricted in managing your horse. It would only suit a horse that likes or needs to be in during the day. I have one that comes in and one that prefers to be out. It's good to have the freedom to choose.
 
Mine always come in during the day in the summer, if I am at work in at about 8 & out about 4,
gives them a break from the heat & files etc..If I'm not working they may go out a but earlier, helps to save the grass or this year.... stops them from rolling in from the field :)

It depends what suits you though, it sounds like you would have to fit in with their routines & there is not more flexability
 
Mine too come in during the day at the moment to give relief from flies.
Another thing you may want to bear in mind with such a little yard if if your horse copes with being left alone? On a big livery yard generally speaking there will always be a few horses about either in or out but on such a tiny yard might they be ridden together ever leaving yours alone or worse- go to a show for a whole day. Fine if your horse can handle that but was a nightmare for me when i tried it.
