Is it normal to feel like this?

Since I have broken my wrist it has really put me off jumping, I was never a great lover of it before but I really enjoyed XC,
The day I broke my wrist I swore that as soon as it was better I would go back to the XC jump that I fell off at and do it again. I've had my plaster off for nearly 3 weeks and the thought of jumping again makes me feel sick!

I really want to try a novice WH class at the local RC this season but I don't know if I will have the guts to do it.
I feel like such a failure about it all.

Can anyone tell me how I can re gain the small amount of confidence I had?

Well maybe just go on a baby xc course?! Just go out have fun and then once you have all confidence you had back in said pony go back to what you fell off at and jump!

Know how you feel - broke my wrist last year doing jumpx and needed to get 2 operations!! wasnt the best!!

You just have to start slowly I think - pop a small log next time your out hacking and build it up from there!

You will get it back eventually - just takes awhile

If nothing works there is no shame in packing it with the jumping. There are still loads of things you can enjoy with your horse without being scared. I gave in with the jumping years as I was so nervous it wasn't really fair on the horse, but still have loads of fun with flatwork and hacking.

I don't want to do major stuff, I just thought it would be nice for us both to try it as he's only a youngster I thought it would be good for him to have some jumping experience under his belt if you know what I mean.

I would love to do dressage but I dont think he's a dressage type and I have a crap memory!
The thought of jumping a small log makes me feel queezy now lol
its so pathetic, as Ive been riding for about 15 years but never really done jumping, apart from on a 16.3 TB mare who would jump her little heart for anyone!
So its really different on a horse that hasn't really got a clue.
XC he gets really excited and strong but SJ he's a bloody sloath and thinks its a comp to see who can knock the most jumps down.

A couple of weeks the local RC was having a clear round XC but cos of the weather it was cancelled, and my friends brave 14 yr old son was going to take Bear round it for me. Hopefully the next one I can get him to take him for me.

It's completely natural to feel how you are feeling

Ditto Booboos - I'm not a huge fan of jumping and although I'm working on getting my confidence back, there are plenty of other things like hacking and flatwork that I enjoy without ever needing to pop a fence if I don't want to!

Having said that, have you tried taking Rescue Remedy or something similiar as it may help to take the edge of your nerves? It's helped me massively.

Most places would sell it I should imagine although I think I got mine from the local health and herbal store - mine is just in spray form, but I think you can drops as well

health shop in redruth sells it, mum had me taking it at one point. if you are worried about jumping again why not hire a school with some jump or make a few at home and do it when there isn't anyone there. then if you don't want to do it you wouldn't feel that your are being pressured to do it.

Maybe a lunge lesson with a small jump on the lunge? I always find I am happier on the lunge as the horse is someone else's responsibility and you could concentrate on your position, etc rather than your worry.

Don't be disheartened, it's completely natural and the guys on this post are completely right, I would say take things slowly, pop a few logs, perhaps set a few show jumps up in a cross country style (group some barrels together etc) then you are jumping in the security of your menage.

failing that come bring your horse to mine (south lincs) and we'll go round a local course 3 miles from me (3ft max) and my sis and i will support you in any way we can.

Re build your confidence like a wall. Start with something very easy, a pole on the floor for example. Add a tiny cross pole after the ground pole a few days later, and build it up very gradually, so that you are almost bored with the tiny challenge that you have set yourself and are itching to move up to the next level. It won't take very long before you're challenge has become far bigger than you can imagine at present! I personally wouldn't go it alone as previously suggested as I think most people are more confident if there is someone with them.

I think it's totally normal - agree with the others - do some smaller classes and your confidence will come bounding back.

I'm taking Calms at the moment (not for riding but for work!) and they really do stop the butterflies and nervous tensions x

I'm her sis!! completly agree wit jo, but also do you have access another horse, one your familiar with and trust? Could progress from jo's excercises in school to bit xc on more experienced horse before trying your baby again.

Just b4 uni i broke my ribs and collar bone in a bad jumping smash (someone elses horse) but I only got my confidence back once I built a real relationship of trust with my youngster, we learnt to trust each other.

Try the school excercises and then find a xc where you have gate options and can pick and choose the jumps you want to attempt, no pressure. Try having a jumping lesson round a xc course once you get to that stage if financially viable.

By all means come play at our local course, fully gated jump what you fancy and I make a mean spag bol after!!!

I going to school him in the field tomorrow while Im waiting for the vet, my friend will be there, so Im going to put a few poles out and do some grid work etc.. and then maybe make a teeny jump!

Thanks for all the advice, Cai and Jo would love to but Im way down the bottom of UK in Cornwall!

Wish me luck! Im going to need it!
