Is it normal to send your horse alive to get put down????????

Hes so lucky

I sold my mare who had navicular early this year as a companion and thought i'd found her a lovely home until i heard that the same person turned up to see a very cheap horse of my friends only the following day. He had his excuses but i still worry that she was sold on as a riding horse and i just pray that shes ok

There are some awful people out there. I hope Freds old owner rings you as I am sure it will reassure her that he is very happy and u obviously love him to bits.
What an awful time he could have been through - poor boy, I am sure as others have said i doubt he went to the abbiture.
I am glad he is getting all the love he needs.

Horses are a nightmare I have held two horses to be PTS for friends of mine solely because they could not be around the first owner was competing on the other side of the country and I held her horse because I knew she would want her hugged by someone who knew her (she has never to this day spoken of it and that was 15 years ago) the second my best friend was on holiday abroad so again I did what I felt she would have wanted. This second horse was very old and it was cold and it was a nightmare as the injections took ages to work.

it does happen

my YO went and looked at a pony for their daughter he was in a right state (with a dealer) and they just couldnt leave him there so brought him home. Turns out he was sent off from his home in Devon to be PTS and was intercepted along the way and made it all the way to essex! Apparently he had broken his withers and used to try and roll whenever ridden so due to old age they decided to have him PTS. Anyhow my YO had him checke dover and apart from beign old he is sound and ok to be ridden gentle as long as rider not heavy. He's a lovely chap and thinks he's gone to horsey heaven

he will life out his life with my YO but old owners thought it was a sick joke when they 1st spoke with my YO, however they are very happy that he's being loved and cared for in his retirement

I am afraid to say that horse owners need to be very much more responsible about their horses if they need to be put down and be there when the deed is done. This is the only way that you can ensure the horse is dispatched.

As regards loan and companion horses many go missing re-appearing as horses for sale.

It would be interesting to determine the true history and different hands this horse went through and determine who was responsible for the horse being sold on rather than put to sleep.

That is a very good point though - if someone can't face the thought of being with their horse at the end (although that is a shame, really), it is best to get someone you know and trust to witness the deed.

Your post has made me feel a little more positive!! He is soooooo great to ride that it would definitely be a shame but he is gorgeous too so I don't mind just looking at him

I will let everyone know about the results if she phones me which I hope to god she does...I told Farmkey that I bare no grudges and even if she could just let farmkey know of his old vet so I could get amy information off them, I would be delighted...

Thankyou everyone

I'm sorry this story doesn't suprise me at all.

There are some folks out there who lie and cheat thought life and don't care if they hurt people or animals just to make a buck.

I do wish you the best and Fred is very lucky to have found you and you are very lucky to able to keep fred as pet aswell

I just hope folk on here think when it the time to pts their equine they do with compassion and also know the deed has been done.

I'm very lucky as kennelman will come out and sort at home very quickly and no pain or upset to horse, only owner who still can't get over losing their equine!! 2yrs and counting.....

This has brought a tear to my eye! Poor Fred! But how lucky he is to have found someone as loving and caring as you, 'fredthoroughbred'!! How wonderful that by some twist of fate he's been given a second chance with you. Hopefully you'll be able to get to the bottom of his problems now if you can get information from his previous vet and owner. But it's so lovely that you're willing to keep him as a pet if it cannot be solved!

As for sending your horse of to be pts I'm afraid I'd have to be there till the end holding my girls hoof!

Poor Fred, poor you and poor previous owner. What an awful situation.

I think we all owe it to our horses to secure a peaceful and dignified end. As much as it would break my heart I will stay with mine to the end.
