For a 3 1/2 month old colt foal to be covering a mare in the field??

Up until tonight I have seen him display typical coltish behaviour, mounting his dam sideways on, chatting up other mares in the herd, nipping etc.

However, tonight when I was calling him and his dam in, he was over the other side of the field and I saw him mount another mare, from the right direction and he was clearly, erm, ready for business!

He came up to the gate with this mare and her filly foal and she was obviously in season and winking at him, he the mounted her again right in front of me, again, fully ready for business.

I pulled him off her and eventually caught him.

Now I am assuming (and hoping) that at his age, he is infertile (only one of his testicles has dropped at the min).

Has anyone else known such a young foal to be quite so coltish?

Yes, I didnt think they would be like that so young!! plus hoping mine wont be like that, cos he's very full of himself at 6 days old!!!

Hopefully someone will be able to answer, maybe post in the new lounge 2 as well? x

Don't worry my little friesian colt who is 11 weeks old has been trying to hump the girls for weeks now and is totally up for it if you know what I mean!!!

He has been copying his dad ever since we covered his mum and obviously he was watching the whole thing! It is perfectly normal for little colts to do it - some are more randy than others - just down to individual characters. Ours was born with 2 huge dangly nuts - which was rather a surprise and he has been strutting his stuff up to our young yearling and 2yr old geldings and roaring at them and behaving just like a stallion - they run away from him even though they are upto 16Hh! He even goes round the field to the other 2 mares, as they tend to graze all over the place, just to check his 2 little filly buddies are still about - he leaves mum way behind and really only uses her for food!!!

We did have another colt foal a few years ago that was like this when diddy and when we had him gelded as a yearling his nuts were as big as an adult stallions!!!!

Just make sure you wean him at 6 months - don't leave him too long as they are technically fertile after that and can cover - or take out any fillies from the field.

Thats interesting!! I'm definately having my gelded at 6 months, hes a little terror already. Ive only ever really bred fillies, its amazing how different they are to colts from so young

Thanks for that blackhorses, mine sounds just like yours, he comes in strutting his stuff and shouting at the 2 stallions on the yard. I think he thinks he could take them both on at once!

I do plan to wean him at 6 months though.
