For horse owners to be constantly worried about the weather? G is in Lw these last few days as it's been chilly and rainy, this morning it was still chilly, now I'm sat here praying it doesnt warm up or i'll have to go back out and de rug, then re rug is it turns again.

I find myself quizzing people about the weather "do you think it'll warm up today?" "I heard it was going to rain next week". And the look at me asif i'm mad.

Years ago I used to chuck ponio out with a NZ on in the winter but from march onwards he was naked. I didnt give it a second thought. We had a thick NZ or nothing. I'm sure the companies have made all these new fangled rugs just to trick us that the horses NEED them and so trick us into buying them.

I am actually sitting here wishing they made a super light light weight rug........

Yes, I constantly worry, was on met office website at 6am to check if I should put a LW turnout on her today or not!!!! Tis a nightmare! Ended out chucking her out naked the last two days and she has been fine! I think we do worry too much, but decided its better not to rug than overrug!

I am a bit of a traditionalist and whip the rugs off at the first opportunity. Mine have all been out 24/7 without rugs for a couple of weeks at least.

I have heavyweight rugs, under duvets, stable rugs and waterproof rain sheets..that is pretty much it.

I've stopped being so fussy with rugs now. I turn my TB out day and night naked now and have done since beginning of April, she has plenty of grass under her feet to eat and keep warm.
I don't see the point of taking rugs on and off constantly, you have to 'rough' em of at some point. I do check the night time temps and it's not dropped below 8 or 9 degree's so thats perfectly fine. The fact that she's still moulting tonnes of fur is evidence that she's warm enough!!

He's only just been clipped (for the first time) and has been feeling the cold easily. My plan is to rough him off over the next copuple of weeks.

I'm sure if you do it gradually over the next couple of weeks he'll be fine. I wouldn't be rugging up at all from 1st May onwards, its plenty mild enough for horses to cope. Unless we get prolonged periods of rain I might put a LW on purely to prevent rain scald.

Yes I am always checking the met office forecast...but I took his rugs off a few weeks ago and he has not had them back on because it has not been cold...perhaps if we were due a frost or it went below 4 degrees he would have his lw back on...but he has a field shelter to hide in.

Katy...if your shettie feels the cold, whip his rug off and let him burn off some of those calories... I'm not trying to be mean BTW

None of my natives wear rugs all year round if I can help it as its a great way to ensure they don't go into spring to overweight..

I used to then I woke up and thought my horse is huge and if he was cold - would not do him any harm to lose a little weight !! he is naked and his clip is still quite obvious

xx

Im terrible with rugs, people at our old farm would be like ''what rugs tonight then Jen'' cus they always knew i would know what the weather was doing, how sad!

We had liveries who used to call and say 'is it raining, because jo-jo needs his rain rug on if it is' several times a day. It took some convinving that yes, they will be fine without changing clothes 5 times a day! I am afraid I don't subscribe to the expanding wardrobes - a turnout rug, a stable rug and a cooler, that's it - am I cruel? I used to hunter clip the TBs, last clip Jan/Feb and then throw them out nekkid around easter - and once they were out rugless, that was it until autumn! I don't think we ever rugged the ponies, and most of them were out 24/7 - they were hairy beasts!

If it is the pony on your signature, I really wouldn't worry about any rugs, he will be fine without.

Gosh, I thought I was the only one!

What a relief to learn that there are other nutters out there who worry about the chilly wind getting on their backs, or the scorching sun when I`ve decided to turn out in a LW.
