was looking at prices of stables, bedding and hay the other day and basically worked out that nowadays it is cheaper (especially in the winter) to be on Full Livery (im talking about around near london where full livery is between £90 - £120 a week)

DIY boxes are around £40 a week then including services, hay, feed and bedding i work out it would cost me more than above

What do you all think ?

Maybe in London but defo not where I am (South Glos)
£40 for DIY is quite steep!
£90 full livery is cheap isn't it? (Not on full livery so not really sure)

not for this area it isnt - you can get it cheaper and as hay is £5.20 a bale now you go through atleast 4 a week

I don't think £40 for DIY is expensive for London, I am in Northumberland and I was offered use of a stable and grazing for £30 a week, nothing else, no school, not even a paddock to lunge/ride, there wasn't even a tackroom or feedroom and no one that would feed/bring in if you couldn't get up there. There used to be loads of farms that did livery but it's really hard to find anywhere now at all.

£5.20 a bale?? Ouch! I got some for £2 the other day, different area tho.

Guess depends on what your horse is like, etc. For example i pay £25 per week for DIY. I have a good doer so hard fed costs me £25 a month (inc vitamin supplement), thats like £6 a week. In the winter I use big bale haylage, a bale lasts me 2 weeks, so costs £10 a week. I use two bales of bedding (miscanthus) a week max which costs £13 in total. So thats a full cost of £54 versus close to £100 (around me) full livery. I can see where you are coming from though I'm lucky to be able to go to the yard twice a day as its 2mins down the road but if I had to travel miles and work ment i had to rely on others the full livery would have to be considered.

I pay £25 a week for DIY. We have a horsewalker, a sand area to lunge in and a floodlit (albeit only one end!) rubber school which is about 45 x 30.

Stables are at least 13 x 12 and have rubber floors.

I feel quite lucky :o), I am one of 3 liveries.....

I think the one on full livery pays £90 a week.

Im on part livery and it works out alot cheaper than DIY in my area.
I pay £45 a week, and that includes, stable, bedding, haylidge, turn out, bring in, rug change etc, feed in the morning if required, use of 30 x 60 sand/rubber arena, use of showjumps, tack rooms, feed rooms, rug rooms, owner is vary experienced instructor/rider and doesnt interfear but there if you need her (i think that is worth alot)
Straw and hay always available so you dont have to worry about going to get it/being at the yard for deliveries etc.

Whereas, around here DIY livery is £30 a week for a stable and tiny bit of paddock on farms with no facilities and also no one to bring in turn out, no arena (if there is is normally not worth the words in the advert). So then you have extra petrol as you have to go to the yard 2 x a day, bedding, feed, which works out to the same as what i am paying. Also you have to go and get all hay, straw etc which takes time, and hassle.

Im definately happy to pay for part livery!
