Yes I think it's fine, I posted a similar question on here after I feel and broke my ribs due to my poor balance and was seriously considering selling my horse because I felt I couldn't cope. We walk and trot on hacks 95% or the time, I only canter uphill as both my horse (he's green) and I find it easier to balance (he never gets over excited even if he's not cantered for ages). If I feel he needs a blast my friend takes him out for a gallop.
We vary or route and do some schooling whilst we hack (lateral work, circles etc) as I don't want him to become bored.
I think it's fine just to walk and trot on hacks, just do what you feel comfortable with.
