Is it Ok to do this?

Hi all

About 3 weeks ago my mare spooked at a banner in the school and i went out the side door and lost a bit of confidence about going in there again. I've hacked her and she's fine and so am i in that respect so last week i began lunging her with her tack on as i usually do and i wanted her to feel ok with the banner again, she did a few spooks but did manage to ger her past it after about 20 attempts!
Anyway this week i thought id try something different and took her in the school in just her head collar and lunge line. What a transformation! No spooking at all. I put a barrel and pole opposite the banner so that she'd have to walk down past it, she was fine, even tickled it with her nose!

Have i made a mistake on taking her in there without the tack? She's just so easy in her headcoller and tonight i had her trotting past it without even looking...Im happy for her that she felt no stress in there and was very willing.
She's almost 5..

Is tack very important when lunging?
 
No dont think you did wrong,we all lunge for quickness without tack,however she has proven to you that she is not bothered by what it was that spooked her and you need to address the issue ridden,you need to be quite firm as she clearly is not phased by it without tack so makes no difference if she is wearing it!!
Take her in the school and get her mind focused on something else before you go near the banner(transistions etc to get her focused)!!Should she spook at it be firm as she is probably pushing her luck a touch!!

At 5 unfortunately you cannot be to soft,you have to be firm or they will walk all over you!!
 
However at 5yrs,yes tack when lunging serves a great purpose so long as it is not overdone and is done correctly!!

What i was trying to do was make the whole arena as relaxed as possible thatw why i didnt tack her up...so
Tack on next time then i'll be on board again!

I really felt a "click" with her tonight, the best felling ever! Feels like she trusts me now..:)
 
That is good,over time you will build a great relationship with her but she will try you out,they all do,lol!!You have done the right thing especially if it knocked your confidence,u have approached the situation with a different angle which is good,and has worked for you both,at least you have seen from the ground she is now ok with it,confidence with the rider is a major issue with youngsters and it looks like you have taken a step back yourself,realising she has unnerved you and you have now taken 10 steps forward!Just remember that she is not phased by it and a stern word in her shell like is called for if she trys it again!!!

I absolutly will not lunge from a bridle. If for some unknown reason, i HAD to have one on, id throw a cavesson over the top anyway.

Prefer cavessons to headcollars as you have slightly more control should the horse go loopy but 99% of my lunge work is done from a cavesson and nothing more

I always use a cavesson on my lad,however never found to have more control with one or the other,previous experience taught me if they gonna pee off they will do it in either and i have had no greater control with one or the other!!However bridle lunging with 2 reins can be very beneficial!!

I watch alot of parelli and no I dont think you did the wrong thing. I would suggest that you let your horse get closer to banners in is own time, alot of patience needed, but probably would be more curious than scared when given more time to investigate something new. Hope this helps.
 
I 2 have watched a certain amount of parelli,I have a stable,happy co-operative horse,will do anything i ask(had him from 8mnth old)broke him myself WITHOUT the help of parelli,etc!!All your horse needs is trust in you!!I respect people have their own views but what the hell is wrong with traditional???I can tell you if i started wafting sticks and bouncing balls round my horse he would think i had gone mad!!!

I watched an episode on parelli last nite and all i saw was a lot of ears flat back and tail swishing???Is this normal???My boy dosnt lay his ears back whatever i ask him to do(i mean flat to their heads??I was always told this is a pissed off horse??)!!Please forgive me if i am wrong!

yes you are wrong, parrelli is wonderful, after all it gets a lot of nutters off the streets tht otherwise might throw balls at your head for such blasphomi!??lol
 
I think you may be making a judgement based on a limited exposure to Parelli.

Parelli isn't magic - it's just what people who know about horses have always been doing. People seem to object to the fact that Parelli has tried to take the basic commonsense out to everybody. Now most of us probably know all this and get on fine thankyou very much. But some people DON'T know the basics of groundwork and respect and how important that is before you get on.

I've had plenty of horses and children's ponies that have responded really well to Parelli techniques and become better animals in our world because of it. It has also helped loads of novice adult and children riders of these animals become better handlers/riders.

You won't hear me slating it. I've heard loads of people knocking it - but never anybody that's actually tried it - properly that is.

Traditional methods are fine,so is Parrelli.Happy horse and owner is what everyone wants,so who cares what method gets you both there?
