As we are having to store the carriage in the trailer we are having to constantly take all of the partitions out to put it in, then put them back in to travel!! Donovan travels absolutely fine, never feel him moving about, so would it be ok to put in the double width bars back and front, and leave him without a partition? Or is it just not safe to do?

Try a short distance and see if he's comfortable. I travel mine without partitions; longest trip he was in there was 9 hours.

Our 14hh pony never had a problem with travelling without a partition. Suggest you put some tie down bolts on the floor and a good security bolt to lock the carriage on to.;)

I always travel a single one without the partition - just full width breech bars front and back - so much better than with the divider -more balanced and more relaxed

There is 2 chains with big padlocks on the carriage, and 4 padlocks on the trailer!!!

I never have the partition in and just use full width breast and breech bars. I only ever travel one at a time - my 16.2 TB or my 11.2 PB welsh and both are very settled. Always cross tied though and as others have said it is far easier to groom/tack up (particularly beneficial if space is tight in lorry park - or it's raining!)

It's very rare I have the partition in mine, I am usually travelling mare/foal or a single horse, it's only the odd occasion I travel 2 and need it in.

Never travel a single horse with a partition; they have so much more room to shift about and find their balance.

Thanks everyone!! Will try at the weekend!! So, do I need to cross tie him? Or still just tied up one side?

Sorry no new comments, but a question. My mare is a poor traveller and always feels like she is falling over or sitting down when I travel her on her own. I have never taken out the partition do you think she would be better at balancing ( I assume this is why she feels like she is falling over or sitting down) if I did this or would she actually fall over? She is not unhappy about travelling in the trailer and would hate her to become unhappy but its a bit scary listening to her stamp and scrabble about. Thanks x

She might actually travel better without the partition Fishy. If she feels like she hasn't got enough room to balance herself out properly the partition being out might help her, certainly worth a test run without it.

i USED TO TRAVEL MY OLD 17/3 IRISH DRAFT CROSS without a partion just breast bar tied on the right hand sode with a haynet, go miles no worries. Some horse do travel a lot better this way as they can spred there hind legs more for balance. But be carefull of round abouts slow and easy.Good Luck.

I travel mine everywhere on my own, whether hunting or eventing; and always travel them with no partition so they can move around and brace themselves comfortably.

They are usually happier to load and stand on the trailer too and i can groom, tack up etc whilst they are on board too.

Have done several 6hr journeys like this and horses get off much fresher at the other end!

Zara didn't travel particularly well with a partition but I need the other side to put all my water containers for endurance. I purchased a full width bar for the back and swung that part of the partition over. She gets to spread her back legs but I still have the majority of the other side for all my equipment.
