Is it ok to wash a horse with Fairy Liquid?

As title really!

With all this lovely warm weather I thought it would be a perfect time to give Gemma a bath (my horse

) and as I'm trying to save the pennies would it be ok to use Fairy Liquid??

If not- any other (cheap!) suggestions?

Wilkinsons tea tree homebrand shampoo. £52p for 1litre. Its amazing stuff

why not use supermarket own brand shampoo. I have used it in the past and was fine. Fairy liquid is quite strong and while it wouldn't hurt them it is designed to remove all the grease.

We use cheapo washing up liquid for the first baths of the season, or when neds are absolutely disgusting and are going to need a couple of goings over

I have wash tails and socks with fairy (it gets them sparkling

) with out any problems. If you really don't want to buy horse shampoo I would be tempted to use human shampoo or baby shampoo, but make sure you wash it out properly!

I stocked up on horse shampoo last week as my fav website had it really cheap!

Just need to find the time to bath the beasties now!

trying at the moment to find something in the bathroom cuboards (sp?) to use.. herbal Essenses??

Nah, not cheap

. Just remember that the washing up liqued is designed to cut through grease, so use occasionally but not all the time (especially if ned is living out), and rinse it well

As to price, all things related to horses are flaming expensive; it is the nature of it!

Just buy 'basics' baby shampoo if you dont want to spend alot, 50p a bottle, does the job!

I just use the cheapest shampoo I can find from supermarkets.
So long as you rinse it well (as with shampoo/etc) you will be able to use fairy liquid no problem.
I have used it quite a lot but always forget you don't need as much as you do with shampoo or cheaper washing up liquid.......I almost loose the horses with the amount of suds it creates!

Personally no, I wouldn't use Fairy Liquid. I know a lot of people do , but I think it's too harsh. To me it's along the lines of using Mr Sheen on coats. It wasn't made or tested for the purpose.

I agree with the others though and will use Baby Shampoo and Baby bath. Generally I do use a horsey shampoo though. Wahl citrus is nice.

I have to say I use only horse shampoo or Hibiscrub on horses, the same way I only use dog shampoo on dogs etc.
It is to do with different skin PH, horse's is more acidic than human, therefore the PH of human shampoo would be to high (I think, I'm confusing myself badly)...
And as for Fairy Liquid, hmmm, no way, well maybe on tail below dock.

I only use Fairy Liquid on her white socks the night before a show as nothing else gets them quite so clean! It's too astringent to use for all over or frequent washing though, I'd be scared of stripping out all the oils in the skin.

Sainsbury's do a tea tree shampoo and conditioner that's 99p a bottle, makes them smell lovely and helps keep the flies off a bit. Oh, and I use Boots own brand anti-dandruff shampoo for her big thick tail - again 99p for a bottle and it lasts ages.

Horse shampoos are ridiculously expensive, I've had the same bottle of back to black shampoo for about three years now, I use a tiny blob on show days as a luxury treat.

I use it to get my grey's tail clean, but otherwise I would buy some cheap human shampoo. I use some nice tea tree stuff from superdrug

I use Asda apple shampoo whih is only 50p a bottle and lasts for ages! I also use Asda coconut conditioner for afterwards and it makes her coat really shiny and soft

I dont bother buying "proper" horse shampoo anymore i`m too tight

That is totally true! I try not to buy horsey "versions" of things if possible for this very reason.

tbh i wouldnt use fairy (many other washing up liquids are cheaper) but seriously i work on the basis if its safe for humans then it will be ok on the horse or dog as lets face it the product was probably tested on animals before us (controversal sp)
i bought some red rum tea tree shampoo for £4 the other day so i think it depends on the brand

Personally I would think it was too irritating for the skin and would dry out the coat and hair......

I use Tesco cheapy shampoo, a litre is about 45p Big bottle with blue and white label and blue shampoo in..... Its great

Washing up liquid contains salt, so no I wouldn't use it. I wouldn't use fruit-or flower "flavoured" human shampoos either - surely they attract insects? I use hibiscrub.
