Is it possbile to have a lorry made to one's own spec? Also in NL2

Okay, so sat contemplating a new lorry. Had a 7.5 ton (which I loved!). Stalled for four, but only had 1.8 ton to play with, so no way would have taken four (unless very skinny rescue cases).

Quite like the rear facing two horse boxes, but only three seats and there's four of us.

Needs to take up to two 17hh-ish neds.

Would like the neds to travel herringbone style.

Can't find one, so the question is - can I have one made to meet these requirements, without breaking the bank!
 
You can, lots of lorry builders make it to your own spec. Our 1st lorry was made to our own spec, little 7.5 ton hunting box. You need to search around as to who does own spec builds for the right price.
 
We had ours made to our requirements. It was an ex John Lewis lorry. As my needs are basic, we saved a lot of money by only having very simple day living & an aerofoil ( 'hat' on the cab) instead of a luton. We were able to buy a far newer lorry than if we'd gone for a fully loaded one with a kitchen etc that we'd never use.

I bought a Scania HGV lorry and a box to fit on it and had it converted. It was one of the most stressful things I have ever done. Yes it was a bit cheaper but the results were 'shabby' to say the least. If you buy a lorry that is already built at least you know what you are paying for.
 
Badminton Horseboxes are brilliant, did my friends 6 horse lorry entirely to their own spec, they kept going up whilst it was being built and suggesting additions/improvements. They also built Vittoria Panizzon's and Carl Hester's. Excellent firm to deal with and quite reasonable too
 
We designed our own 7.5t box and it was built by East Riding horseboxes. We had it 5 years and the quality was good. We sold it for just 5k less than we paid for it.
Ours was 2 horse with extra living on a small chassis as we only travelled one but had 3 adults living 3 days a week in it.

Yes I agree entirely, thank you very much BADMINTON HORSEBOXES for being so helpful for the last few years, my lorry is a perfect affordable luxury for me, 3 horses with living.

Not always the most popular choice, but Equitreck do one of these with a five seater cab!

Sonic 5 has 1000kg payload or the supersonic 5 appears to have 2000kg payload if I've read the technical specs correctly. INternal height is 7' 6" so not sure about that for your 17hh-ers!

I am about to have a 3.9t built to my spec. You can get cabs with 5 seats but obviously this ads to the weight. Im downgrading from a 7.5t as its too expensive to run/keep and i dont need such a big lorry. With the 3.9t i will have enough payload to be able to carry my 2 17hh horses. I have around 18/19k to spend on a build so will be able to get something nice for that.
 
Mine was built to my own spec by Galaxy Horseboxes and I can honestly say it was done brilliantly with no stress. It's a 7.5T stalled for 2 horses/3 ponies and has a 2 tonne payload. It also has a shower, hob, sink, oven and fridge, bed over Luton and the table and benches convert to another double bed. There is a hot and cold outside horse wash too, which is probably my fav thing about it! I love it.
 
I can't believe this one has popped up again - the OP is about two years old lol.

However, the timing is impeccable as we're looking at it all again. Just trying to decide whether to go for something that carries two big horses comfortably (or three ponies), or if we need more space and want to go to an HGV.

All the responses are useful leads for more info gathering, so thank you :D

Just wondering now about budgets. D says that if we go for a lorry this time, he does not want to be having this conversation again in x years time :rolleyes::cool:, so I need to get it right this time :D. I know of people who have spent many tens of thousands on lorries and not been happy.

I'd love to go mad and get an Oakley one day, but with D1 wanting to be a vet, that isn't likely to happen lol :eek::rolleyes::cool::D

Try Praters of Hollingdon - they're currently building me a 7.5t and the finish on their lorries is as good as the Oakley (they use some of the same materials) but much cheaper! They've mostly worked on large lorries in the past (including Prince Charles' polo lorry!) but they're willing to do smaller lorries too and you will be very involved throughout the whole buidling process.

I think I shall enjoy having a look about now :D :D.

D is finishing off Hugh (the Huge Tralier), so we have transport - finally! :eek::rolleyes::cool:, but the more I think about it, the more I want a lorry again :D
 
OP we had ours build by Equitimo in somerset like dressage diva said they do 'Oakley' type lorrys without the 'oakley' type prices!! if your still looking they are well worth a look!
