Is it possible to find a good companion home at the moment?

Is anyone taking on companions, even for a few months, or am i more likely to get lots of calls from people who will pretend to love the horse and then sell it for meat at the earliest opportunity?
(sorry to be so negative but there are a lot of horror stories posted here...)

I had trouble trying to sell my companion a while back as my pair werent getting on but after keeping him i realised that it was for the best.

Their are special retirment homes but you will pay a small fortune for these

I think you're right to be wary. Unless I knew the person I would not send a 'companion' anywhere I'm afraid.

Where are you based? my friend is looking for a companion (would need to be a horse rather then a pony 15hh or above - as one of her horses only feels secure with a larger animal), she has 2 geldings one of which she competes regularly and the other is a youngster being brought on, so she is looking for a 3rd horse to keep them company when one or the other isnt around. she has just bought some lovely land stables etc. and is very experienced looking after horses. We're in the leicestershire area.

I would never loan my horses for the reason you have stated. In the middle of a credit crunch unless you have an 11hh lawn mower I would be double worried.

Whilst I tend to agree with most of the comments above about being very wary when placing a companion horse, I would like to point out that there are some very good homes too.
It took me a long time (and several visits to rescue centres) before I was able to find a companion pony so I would say that GOOD companion ponies aren't that easy to come across - certainly not in my area!
I ended up with one companion pony that wouldnt stay on her own (in spite of being assured that she would) and then having to get a companion to keep the first companion company.
To be on the safe side I would always loan rather than sell.
