Is it possible to find the horse I want for £4k?

Having had my amazing hunter pts before Christmas and been given the choice of buying the little mare I have on loan and deciding not to, I am now in the process of starting to look for something else.

The horse I have on loan now is just 15hh and a cobby skewbald irish mare who is 7. She is so easy to do and a star in the hunting field who will jump anything but also exceptionally strong. She is also very basic (i.e what you see is what you get if that makes sense - my old horse was a wily bugger and I loved him for it. I think she lacks in intelligence but not common sense). Anyway I was offered her for £4k which is what I've got to spend but do have some reservations eg. I want something bigger (if she was a hand bigger she would be ideal) and something that will turn its hand to whatever I want i.e. team chasing, hunting (most important job and it needs to be able to jump anything and everything) and the odd hunter trial. Also something that is happy to be on its own and is fun to exercise.

Am I kidding myself that I will find something like that for £4k or shall I prepare myself to take out a loan?!!
 
You can easily find what you want for that money. I sold my 12yr old mare for just under 4k a bit over a year ago, and she was a point and jump mare, very easy to do and a real allrounder.
It might take a little sifting through to find a good one though, lots of overpriced horses clogging the market up these days.

I think that's more than enough money. We bought my sisters a few years back (4 yo 16.1hh TB x Andalusian), he'd done the basics and was just sooo laid back and now does a bit of everything. We took him hunting and you'd think he was an old timer.

He was for sale for £3250 but i got the price down to £2600, so think got a bargain. He's now insured for £5000 (he's rising 8) although i think he'd be worth more to be honest (needs a bit of flatwork mind!). I think either a youngster or a horse say around 12/13 you could pick up easily for £4K, i have seen a load for sale and i've been looking under the £3k mark (well window shopping, sadly I've not won the lottery yet!)
 
If I was to sell my horse that is the sort of money I would ask for him - LW Cob 15.2hh Blue Roan, lives to jump and will have a crack at anything you put him at (will jump on own if turned out in school!) hacks out alone, company very easy to do and friendly no vices or quirks. But he is certainly no team chaser and I guess the cobby mare you have been offered isn't either, think if you want something with enough sense to hunt nicely and enough ability to TC you may need to find a little bit more money! On the other hand if you are happy with a TB loon you will probably find one easily

I scour Horsemart & Horsequest everyday and even the Pony Club Classifieds!!

OH's father is going to look at one for me on Sunday - 16hh 7 yr old TB which jumps anything and is very sensible for £3k. The idea is that I can find something and then use the extra money to buy a trailer so I can go visiting around the place!!

That should be plenty of money to find what you want. I find that as soon as you want to do dressage (even unaffiliated) above novice level is when you hit a problem with that kind of budget.
 
My Trainer says its not worth getting out of bed for if its less than 6k she frightened me.

Re the Cleveland Bay thing I abso Bloomin Lutely Agree Gulliver is a Cleveland Bay and he may be lame and naughty at the moment but he is the nicest bloke I know apart from my OH.
 
The thing is I don't want to do dressage, never have and never will. I used to think it was something I had to do to be able to do the fun bits eventing. I am NOT competitive at all. All I want is a lovely horse to replace my brilliant but complete arse of a horse so we can go hunting and have fun, stay out all day and jump everything (safely)!!
