I've been internet shopping but the paint is more expensive than the poles even for a little tin!

Is there such a thing as cheap gloss paint or are my poles fated to stay "working hunter" rustic style? ;)

I bought some spray paint off ebay - it was designed for outdoor/indoor/all types of wood, metal, plastic etc, and was around £3 per can. I had four cans and four poles, but they only managed to do half of the two poles I had, so am now going to have to order more to finish them all off properly. So all in all it's going to cost me around 40 - 50 quid when considering postage etc. But tbh looking at gloss paint and undercoat (which is a must really) then it still works out cheaper

Sorry brain isn't working properly now it's so late :o
Do you mean that the 4 cans you had did the equivelant of 1 completely covered pole?

Did you have different colours or just white?

I seen some dulux gloss in Wilkinson's yesterday. 10.97 each or two for a tenner!!! Should be on their website.

We got gloss from b and q. Value white was about 13 for a large tin and colours were about 15 for a smaller tin.WIth 1 white and 1 colour we did 4 poles and still got a little left. The colour was obv running out. Plenty of white left.

Most DIY stores have a shelf of dented tins or returned tins. If you don't mind what colours you get that's worth a try

Ditto WelshD, got all mine cheap from the bargain buckets at B&Q, Wickes etc, never paid more than a fiver a can and had all sorts of colors, you've reminded me that mine need doing really, stored outside so need re-painting every couple of yrs. I don't undercoat either, just slap the gloss on thick as you like without dripping and do at least 2 coats on rustic poles as they do absorb the paint rather well. I tried the can spray paint as well but it was useless and more went on my arena than the poles...........

I'm glad you posted this I'm looking for the same! I've been able to find a couple of tester pots in b&q but anything a decent size cost as much as the poles!

We bought a load at Home Bargains for about £3.50 a tin, some were gaudy orange and bright blues, perfect for poles!

Have you tried asking friends/neighbours to look in their garages for left over paints. We've always got pots left over from paint jobs. Daughter has just taken leftover paints and has managed to paint 8 poles using leftover coloured gloss. She just had to buy white gloss.

I bought some red, blue and yellow gloss a few weeks ago for £7 each for a decent sized tin. They were from Harry Tuffins which is probably no help to you as I don't *think* that they are a nation wide store.

Look on Freecycle and put up a wanted add -people often put half full tins up on my local one left over from projects and free to collect :)

Most councils have recycling places for furniture etc. They usually have a shed out back full of half-full tins of paint available for next to nothing so that it doesn't go to landfill.

:)

None of my friends and family have done any redecorating in the last few years except my aunt who rus a painting and decorating business but I would think that she just buys what she needs or keeps left overs for other jobs but I can ask :o

No Harry Tuffins here but thank you :)

I tried that but there were no replies :(

Ooh good tip! (no pun intended!) I'll go and ask them next time I'm up there too :D

Cheers everyone! :D

I got mine from a 'cheapo' shop. Boyes I think, don't think they have them in scotland. Home Bargains, Wilko, B & M etc should have some. B&Q are always a ripoff. I also used up some leftovers out of the garage.

I've never heard of Boyes (in my head that came out Boyeees ;)) and we don't have any leftovers :(

Put a wanted ad on freecycle or realcycle or similar.

Lots of people have part tins sat on garage & shed shelves and tips don't take them anymore. You may need to buy white but that can be cheap on bogof. Masonary paint is ok on poles as well as gloss.

Aye I've tried freecycle and nothing came of it unfortunately

Oh I didn't know you could use masonry paint too, thanks for that :D

Try your local recycling centre. Ours lets you help yourself to the tins of paint that other customers have brought in. Once painted the entire house for nothing in a nondescript shade of beige by mixing up a load of free paint from the tip.

Alternatively to paint you can buy "pole roles" from places like Robinsons. They are plastic sleeves that come in colour and white (various colours) and slide over rustic poles, turning them into instant coloured poles. They also are slightly spookier than regular poles (as some flap occasionally!), keep them free from the weather (so preserve the poles in winter) and enable you to still use the rustic poles for XC/WH fences if you need to..

It's a good idea Honey08 but if I can't paint them cheapy cheap I think I'll just leave them rustic for now I'm being a right cheapskate atm due to lack of funds :o Even the pole sleeves are the price of poles

I sound like a total skinflint right now I know but I'm still struggling on the job front :(

Totally OT but I remember Boyses! :D They had one when I used to live up in Beverley, East Yorks. No one knows how to say it right, either
