My second hand leather saddle cost the grand sum of £240 so yes, very much possible! It was our only option in fact as nothing off the peg would fit her and it was a case of trying on second hand ones and adjusting where possible. In the end the saddle that fit her best turned out to be one that had originally been custom made for an Irish Draught, which shows how wide and flat she is.

The key is to find a local saddle fitter who deals in second hand saddles and has a large selection of them to bring to you and try on. If you post your location then people might have suggestions.

try Ebay

My friend got a practically brand new ideal saddle for £380 for her cob... saddle fitter came to make sure it fitted and it was like it could have been made for him.

Very possible - just got a very nice one for £325. My local saddlers all have a good second hand saddle section. Not sure where you are location wise but try your local saddlers - or come to Sussex!

Definately ebay, I tend to get a saddle fitter out and try all different saddles then when I find one that fits i make note of the saddle make and model then i know the one I order will near as damn it fit.. Bit naughty I know but they get the money when they come out and fit the new saddle.
I got an almost new Ideal GP for my wide mare and it was £225, bargain!

What size/make are you looking for?

I have one of these I no longer use:
http://www.calcuttandsons.co.uk/acatalog/GD_Saddle.html

...its no good for my high withered lad but its wide enough accross the front for a cobby/low withered horse.

Think its a 16.5'' in brown...in very good condition generally, its very comfortable for general riding and jumping.

PM me if you are interested, I certainly wouldnt be wanting anything like £400 for it
