Is it really worth getting turnout rugs cleaned and re-proofed?

How much did you pay for your current horse(s)?

To be honest I've had a few rugs cleaned but with the deals you can get and the fact that my horse is growing and well...likes ripping them it's cheaper buying a new rug, by the time you have paid for repaires, cleaning and re-proofing, I can't justify all that hassle then sticking a old patched up rug back on him, I'd rather buy a few new ones every year.

Thanks everyone.

It sounds like the good rugs don't actually need doing every year, but its nice to start winter with them clean. I'll see what my bill's like this time and might give it a miss next year.

i dont have turnouts refroofed at all. I have some that are still waterproof 11 years on!

IMO, when people have had the reproofed etc, they end up leaking sooner than if you just left them as they were.

I tend to use dustbins of water, throw my rug in, jump in and tread it around, tip it out, brush the rug, hose off, hang to dry, put on horsey when needed.

i dont i think they come back less waterproof and the price it is to have them washed and cleaned nower days you can buy a new one!

I have read all replies with interest as I operate a rug washing business. Have to say that I have been busier this year than ever as am finding that people are looking after their rugs more, probably due to the "credit crunch". I only use quality products, ie NuUmed wash and Nikwax and have to say that I have not had any complaints regarding leaks using Nikwax. Some companies charge more to use it whereas I use it as standard. Obviously rugs wear like our coats and depends on how much a horse rolls and the amount of weathering a rug gets before it may leak, washed or not. There is a lot of truth in you get what you pay for and my mare has a Rambo Duo which is going into its 4th winter. has been washed and re-proofed each year and still looks like new. She also has clean stable rugs through Winter as can also be a scruff! I keep my prices affordable so that people can look after their rugs which hard earned cash has been used to buy.

I do get mine cleaned, not reproofed though. Owning a confirmed rug wrecker means I refuse to pay lots of money for rugs, yet the ones I do have that he hasn't trashed have lasted well doing it this way. I tend to wash his stable rugs at home, it's just the TO's that i send away.
