Is it that much dearer to run a 4 x 4

I have my own trailer and bought an x-trail after much help from my dad as regards running costs , most of my driving is round town during the week so no way could i afford a gas guzzler , i have an ifor 505 and a 13.3 pony so the x-trail copes fine , depends on what finances you have available , the x-trail is very popular a it can tow happily but is quite economical too ,
 
Perfect 11s I am surprised at your comment that LPG gives a lower mpg. All the cars that I have had with dual fuel give the same mpg on either fuel. My oh gets 28-30mpg on both. Also when we went looking for a dual fuel car the car sales we spoke to said they couldn't get enough of them. It may depend on how many LPG garages there are in your area as to the demand and supply.
