...Or has my lovely mare turned into the Antichrist??

She has not long turned 6, has settled into her new home with me. We've had a couple of bumps in the road with back / saddle issues but now all ok.

Schooling like a dream - Hacking however is another issue! She is just getting worse and it is driving me potty!

Our normal 1hr hack route last night took 2hrs due to the constant stopping, spinning, backing up, spooking, napping etc. Had a total meltdown at a runner through the hedge, then proceeded to point blank REFUSE to walk nicely through the gate (granted, quite a narrow not nice gate, but one she has been through plenty of times before) I ended up having to get off, lead her through and get back on the other side.

It's not a hugely taxing hack, but she was covered in sweat when we got back to the yard, snorting like a dragon.

GIVE ME STRENGTH.

Anyone else having the same issues? I am putting it down to the 'Kevin' phase. And I am drinking a lot of G&T to calm my nerves!

The Devil himself it is then!

A friend had asked if I fancied hacking tonight, but after a rubbish night's kip last night I simply don't have the energy to have the battle so schooling it is.

Bloody horses.

Glad that i'm not the only one with a devil horse at the moment then! Spent all winter working hard on the flatwork, mare (7yrs old) going really sweetly, then overnight complete change! Tanking off, leaning on the bit - teeth, saddle, back recently checked. I second bloody horses.

I did end up hacking last night as it was just too hot to contemplate schooling, and she was good as gold. Perhaps she is reading my threads?!

Though the likelihood is that she went out with the other mares, she turns into a squealing prancing tart when she goes out with the geldings.

Fingers crossed for another good ride tonight, though it seems doubtful to happen 2 days in a row...

Last night another horse spooked at a man in the horse walker and my 5yo took it as a warning. Even when the man was gone she was prancing like cartoon horse every time we went near it

I spoke too soon. Horrendous hack tonight. One of the mares we went out with had a fart-arse about and naturally that meant that jelly had her ears up my nose the whole ride, spooking at her own shadow and leaping into the air at every opportunity.

I actually had a stitch by the end of the ride.

I'm sure they will all chill out soon. For maybe a month. And then winter will be on the way so cue mental again.

On my ride yesterday we did a performance the Lipizzaners would have been proud of. I can't even blame it on the grass because she's in a dry lot - but a new, very sexy gelding has just gone into the paddock next door.

Nothing like vertical manoeuvres to remind you to get on with replacing that stirrup tread.......

And obviously now we know there are horse eating ghosts in that particular field I can expect meltdown next time we go anywhere near it. Give me strength (& superglue)

Oh gosh, glad it's not just me. D is usually very polite apart from spooking at things I know he is scared of; trailers, suddenly appearing barking dogs in gateways etc, that I can deal with but the other day he was so out of character. The second I picked up a contact he turned into a leaping devil. Huge leap into canter on the moor which he's never done before! Contact dropped, head down plod. I've just put it down to him feeling very well at the moment but it doesn't help my confidence!

I have given up for the next few weeks - we go on holiday next tuesday so she is also having a holiday from today until we get back.

I'm hoping I will come back to a saintly, normal horse, instead of the lunatic I am dealing with currently.

SEL - I snorted tea on my laptop at your sexy gelding comment.

My traditional up until the age of 7 was a total pain to ride spring and late summer. He would be spooky and naughty. It usual coincided with when he was having a growth spurt. As he was very keen to grow I think he got uncomfortable and that made for interesting riding. When you combine growth with the Kevin's ,plus good grass......
