I have a 14 yr old nearly 15 cocker spaniel, she's aged quite rapidly in the last year, but yesterday morning she threw up her breakfast and all her water, last night she started panting on and off, and today she is much the same, still jumping out of her basket and asking to go out etc though, only eating bacon and cheese (not ideal i know but hey!) and will only take water from the syringe, won't drink for herself...

She doesnt seem distressed, but gets disorientated easily. When we rang vets for advice they told us we should bring her in to be hospital, ised but if its time, shes not distressed at home, but would be in the vets, so that just seems unfair.
At the moment we are taking her to the vets when i finish work tomoro afternoon, see what they say, but I have a feeling that she won't be coming home again :(

How do you know if you're making the right decision? I've never had to do this before :(

Thanks for reading! :)

You just know and is sounds like you do. Big hugs, be strong for your girl and be hugely grateful that you've had the privilege of her for so many years. That is extremely fortunate, IMO.

As ct said, it's just one of those things that you know, even if you haven't been there before. We lost our old BT back in April, and his going was the first either of us had experienced. He was actually OH's dog, and he woke me on the morning Tugg left us to tell me the time had come.........:( It was a difficult time for us, but we knew we were doing the right thing by Tugg.

Sending you some (((((hugs))))), and will be thinking of you tomorrow.

She'll tell you, and you'll know, and as CT says you are already asking the question...she's a fantastic age and we're all here if you decide that the time is sooner rather than later x

Thank you

Unfortunately I have a whole morning of work to get through first :( But I've pampered my girl tonight so hoping I've done all I can for her! We've had her since I was 7, so I'm sure it will be difficult, but yes I was very privelaged!

Also have an 18month old collie x jack just hoping he will be ok without her as he's started moping around her which is indicating even more that it is time :(

Thank you

My beautiful girl Honey passed away over night :(
She looked very comfortable when I found her in her basket, I guess the end was much sooner than I realised.

Part of me feels very guilty, yet part of me is glad I didnt have to make that decision. Before I went to bed she was very comfortable, not distressed and having lots of cuddles, I just hope she wasn't suffering in silence, although she wasnt the kind of dog to do that! :o

Thanks for all replies :)

Aw so sorry to hear this, RIP Honey. Try not to feel guilty, it sounds as if she went very peacefully and in the comfort of her own bed, I think it is what many of us wish for our dogs and not many have this happen.
Thinking of you, try to remember all the happy times with her.

Sweet dreams honey x

Lucky girl to pass in her comfy bed with a tummy full of bacon and cheese! Thoughts are with you, they take such a part of our heart when they leave us :(

:( So very sorry. :( At least her passing was peaceful and stress-free.

Please don't feel the least bit guilty about any of this. You did your very best for her, and perhaps her way of easing the burden of going to the vets was to go this way. I expect you could use some more (((((hugs))))).

RIP, sweet Honey. :(

Aww this made me shed a tear (I'm such a softy). So sorry to hear your bad news but you should be more than happy to think that she had such a wonderful and long life with you. She may be gone, but your memories together will always be with you x

Im so sorry to hear this but she made the decision for you and you have nothing to feel guilty for. Her last night with you was spent being spoilt and loved and she would have known that as she slipped into her last sleep.

Chin up you and her were very privileged to share part of your lifes together.
