Is it to much to ask my friend to my horse to a competition?

Hi Guys,

I have got myself a bit of an issue and was thinking off asking my friend but I don’t want to feel like I am using her .

I booked my new horses first competition. I am still not ready to ride him at a competition yet but the lady that schools him is . I also have a big qualifier I want to do at the end of may and was wanting to ride him . We discussed getting him out with her first .

We are supposed to go out next Wednesday and then the 8th with the schooling lady competing him . We where planning for me to do a class on the 12th and schooling lady do one. Ready for my qualifier on the 22nd .

I have paid and entered the classes for the all 3 as well as booking time of work for one . But this Morning I get a message from the schooling lady to say she can’t both dates now as she’s double booked herself for the 8th with another two horses she riding for someone else and that now she has an exam on the 12th.

I said okay but really need to get him out at least once before 22nd of may . She will only do Monday Thursday or a Sunday . She also said she doesn’t want to travel more than an hour. Don’t see what that matters as I either pay her fuel and travel time or she comes with me .

I don’t have that may other people i could ask apart form my Friend. She often grooms for me and will warm up one if I am on the other . She also comes and jumps one or two every few weeks . She’s a great help to me but won’t take any payment . I help her at shows with her horse but not to the extent she helps me as I am not able to . I pay for her to have the odd lesson with my trainer sometimes on mine or sometimes on hers . She had a sit on my new one ahead of a planed lesson next weekend on him . Ready for if she warms up on the 22nd . Would it be to much to ask her to take him to a competition?

How would you go about asking her without sounding like I am taking the Micheal …

I always feel guilty because she’s a major support to me and saves me a lot of money if I was paying a groom or someone to come jump them.

Thanks in advance

It sounds like you've got a great friend there, but I'm guessing that she gets lots of enjoyment out of the arrangement as well! ? I would definitely ask her if she would be available to take you and your horse to the competitions and explain about having been let down by your trainer double-booking herself. I'm sure that if she is free, then she'd be happy to help out. I would still offer to pay for her costs and time - and perhaps if she won't accept payment for her time, offer her a follow-up session(s) with your trainer on her own horse?
Good luck with your new horse! ?

Just ask her and say you'd like to py her for her help as you would have been paying the lady who schools her. If she refuses payment but is happy to help you I'd buy her something nice either for herself or her horse.

I would ask her if she will do it and I would not pay her but I would buy something she would really value based on your knowledge of her .
Barter is a good way forward as well .
