Hi guys can you help me please? My boy has just turned five, last Monday. Ive had to buy him a new bridle as he has out grown the one he had a year ago. He has not started to fill out yet. I was told Welshies are late developers. Is this right? Thanks.

Yes it is. Mine didn't finish filling out until he was 7/8 years. Unless they have been pumped up for inhand showing they take a long time to mature.

My C will be 7 in may, and looks different every day! He's grown out of all sorts. When I bought him at 4 he was in a 5'3 rug rapidly went into a 5'6 and now his bottom is slightly hanging out of a few! He's getting expensive! When I broke him he was in a medium saddle and was a little weed, he's now in a xxw and resembles a small tank.....so yes they mature late if they have been given time and not had food shovelled into them for showing as youngsters.

Yes late developers!

I've seen a few of the girls I was at previous yard with and they've all commented on how different my 10yr old looks. Admittedly a lot of that is down to him muscling up with his dressage but they do seem to go through quite a few leggy stages before they finally look like proper horses :D

This was the age mine properly filled out and matured. He looked pretty lanky until then! I think they're similar to warmbloods who apparently mature quite late too (and the warmblood I used to own DID only fill out at 8).

It's not just Welshies!! Everyone should read Dr. Debs article about Ranger. It shows the development of ALL horses/ponies. The last part of the body to mature is the spine - where we put all our weight!! And that is about 6 - 7 years old!!! And we want to start riding them at 2???!!!!~

Thanks guys. Well i gave him the winter off to give him time to chill and because i was waiting for a hip replacement. i now have a young girl riding him lightly a couple of times a week. Im sure he has got taller going to get the stick out later. Im in no rush for him to develop. Its just that someone told me last week he was a runt. I always thought they welshies were slow to develop xxx

Probably true. I bought my Welsh Section D at 5+ years. She grew 2 inches in the next two years, from 15.1 to 15.3. She developed in every sense, physically and mentally (and nothing due to me as I'm an idle happy hacker) and only developed her good looks, which are lovely now, aged 8. I think it's a lovely attribute, albeit a tad expensive, as it's like buying a plant in bud - the best is yet to come!

Goodness so he could have grown taller. He was 13.2 when i had him. Thats what he is meant to be as he is reg sec c. Might be changing that then. Its a great breed.I love my boy.

I haven't had a stick on mine so can't give you an accurate hight now, but he was approx 14.1 when I got him rising 3 and now at 10 he's somewhere around the 15.1 mark (Section D) obviously different breed lines etc all plays a part but I don't think mines unusual in shooting up so much!

Mine was the opposite, about 15hh of leg by the age of 2! He grew another inch (and a bit) but just started going outwards from then on :p

He really started maturing physically at about 8 years and mentally at 10!

This^

All breeds mature skeletally at the same rate.

IIRC, it's 5 1/2 but some very big horses can take an extra six months. Of course a horse can still develop muscle and develop mentally after this time so they can go up a rug size due to this (muscle development).

So if anyone tells you that TB's mature quickly or Arabs mature slowly (for example) - they are wrong. ;)

yes.

my welsh cob Dragon is 8 this time and has finally filled out to his full show potential

he was a scrawny, under weight 2 year old when i bought him. and now he is a beautiful full bodied hansom chap
