Is it unlucky to change a horses name?

I hope not as I've done it a few times!!

Got a horse called Cruise (by Cruising surprisingly) changed his name to Bertie.

Riverdance Roski Rebel was called Rebel when I got him so changed it to Roski as he is the least rebellious horse in the world.

When I got my mare she was called Storm and I used to know a horrible horse called Storm so changed it to Nelly (as she is big and grey like an elephant :D)

Only ever had bad luck with Bertie but he was just nuts.

Only if you're superstitious!
I have changed names before... No way was the strapping dark bay colt I bought going to remain as Prancer!!!!

I've no idea what my mare's previous name was so she had to have a new one. As it turns out she was the luckiest horse in the world as I spent over £40K controlling her life-threatening condition and she lived an extra 18 years as a result. Bad luck? Only for me!

My pony had his name changed before i got him. He was 'Danny' and got changed to 'Taffy' as the owned already had a Danny. I've tried calling him by his old name, but he doesnt respond to it.

He's lived a long life, but has a few illnesses so not sure if i'd say its unlucky or not.

Personally i wouldn't change a horses name; as i am superstitious.

I'm not in the least bit superstitious, and I changed the name of my first horse as soon as I handed the cash over.

Within 20 minutes, his behaviour had changed and he bucked me off. Bucked me off again every time he was ridden over the next few weeks, then he was kicked in the field and had 6 months box rest, then returned to work and bucking, was diagnosed with KS and SI issues, and eventually was PTS more than a year after I bought him.

I'll never change a horse's name again...!

i think there is about as much bad luck changing a name as there is having a horse in green... none! ;)

I also decked out above horse in all new green stuff as soon as I bought him...I'll never put green near a horse again either...! :p

I never changed D'Arcys name when I got her as I liked that name but her passport says Miss D'Arcy but for shows she is stormy tempest (unpredictable storm - shes a chestnut mare) lol.

Breagha never came with a stable name but recently found out she was called Pippa as a foal and I hated her passport name as it was Fangs Flicker - so I named her breagha and her passport name is now Bragail Breagha which is gaelic for Cheeky and Beautiful :D

I don't like changing their names but I made an exception when I ended up with a filly called Fanny. It wasn't helped by also having a stallion with the stable name of Dickie at the time and my habit of speaking about my ponies as "my <horsename>". :p

Our TB's name is Johnny's Hunter. Unfortunately she is a mare....... would love to change it for comps but as she raced & we would like to do ROR stuff with her, not sure if we can. Mind you, that is academic at the moment:(

ROFL :D I would definitely have made an exception with that one!

Changed everything's names! Tried to keep it similar to their original names, but some didn't suit the horse. Had mixed luck, but I think that's just horses for you.

To be fair a couple were from dealers, and didn't have names. When we got passport through for Sims he was actually called Redwin, which is really nice, but we'd already named him Simba and it had stuck.

I've not changed passport names but have changed lots of stable names.

My current two both had different names when they arrived. One didn't pay any attention to her given name and my husband started calling her something different (slightly rude) which irritatingly she started to respond to. I then had to alter it slightly to something similar sounding (to the rude name, it is totally different from her passport name) but more appropriate to shout in the field. The other we just didn't like her name and so changed it, we chose something similar as she did answer to her name.
