looking for a loan home for my girl?
She is currently out of work with SL damage, she has been off work since october '08 and had 6 months of box rest from may '07-sept '07 due to another injury which ended up causing the SL damage.
She was 5 when she first injured herself and is now 7 so has v low milage but was jumping up to 3'3 and starting xc when she was in work and had done some low level unafilliated dressage. She has also had 2 months professional schooling so she is not totally green.
The vet has advised me to get her re-scanned towards the end of the summer now that she has had nearly a year off so see if there is improvement.
Now, here is my problem. If vet says that she can be brought back into work, I am in a pickle because we are wanting to start a family asap and I don't want to ride if pregnant. I also have realised that even before our injury dramas I think El is much more talented than me and I know she should be out competing and jumping and I think at this time I just need a happy hacker I can drag in from the field at the weekend.
I would never sell her because we have been through hell and high water together, but is it worth (and on the basis a miracle happens and she can be ridden!) looking for a loan home that could bring her back into work or are most people looking for the finished product?
If she can't be ridden she will just stay with me as a lawn mower, but I was just wondering whether anyone would want her if it turns out that she could do a job?
Opinions v appreciated! Thankies

be very careful,
if you loan her get a solicitor to write something up don't just go on a handshake, make sure you specify exactly what she can and can not do, ideally state they use your vet and follow his advise if possible be on a yard or in an area you specify.
build in notice periods, and conditions where by you can terminate the loan with no notice such as neglect/abuse etc, who pays for what and that any insurance other than vet bills pays out to YOU, since she is a mare add in who owns any foals, its not unheard of for loan mares to 'accidentally' have foals!
it may be better to let her go as a companion for a year or so then try if you can ride her yourself,
or see if someone wants a light hack only while waiting for their youngster etc.
best of luck both on the mare and the family.

Salee outlines this well, save me writing it again

Just been through similiar process.I decided to look for long term companion home as my 8 year old has been out of work more than in and still has lameness issues.I decided it was kinder to put him as companion than keep bringing him back into work and having him breakdown again. When he was advertised I made sure stressed that he might need 2 years off and may never come sound although with plenty of time and age on his side he does stand good chance.
I have just found him a lovely home the lady isnt worried if he cant be ridden she wants a horse to heal and is doing lots of courses, she also wants to do a little natural horsemanship which is ideal as he will be mentally occupied and loves tlc and in hand work.
I had references from vets and spoke to rospca as she has rescued and adopted other horses. She has offered him back if he ever comes sound but I will probably gift him to her to make sure she thinks of him as her own .
I have had about 10 calls in 3 weeks so this time of year seems to be good for loaning. He is tb so I reallly thought that it would be a problem but not everyone wants pony especially if they have acres of lush grazing.
I advertised on project horse as companion.Hope you find what you are looking for.
