I was just wondering what my trailer is actually insured for?

I don't mean price, but other than theft, won't my vehicle insurance pretty much cover everything else?

Sorry! I know I really need to look at the policy,

but does anyone know off the top of their head? Who doesn't bother?

no it won't.Should an accident happen who will replace your trailer and who will recover it from the motorway should something happen. Normal breakdown cover doesn't cover trailers, nor does it cover livestock within the trailer.Insurance doesn't just cover theft but also accidental damage. The correct type of breakdown cover will also ensure your horses removal to safety or your destination should the worse happen.
I don't yet have my own trailer but I do have access to one.The agreement is that I am able to borrow it providing I insure it in case the worst should happen.

while your trailer is attached to your car (or should be if for some freak reason it became disconnected) it is covered by your car insurance. At all other times it needs seperate insurance for damage or theft.

I claimed for damage a few years ago when a panel melted when the nearby barn burnt down. My friend also claimed on hers when a tree fell on it. So I'd say it's worthwhile!

standard car insurance will not cover your trailer even when hitched to your insured vehicle unless it is specified in your policy, again some insurers will cover your trailer but will not if horses are on board.....I for example have std fully comp motor insurance with towing included, breakdown rescue with SEIB and std insurance for my trailer with SEIB

I queried the car being insured while towing a trailer and they said yes it was but the trailer isnt insured by the car insurance for damage etc when being towed. The car insurance covers the car only.

That while your trailer is attached to a car it is covered by your car's insurance.

Another poster said she'd had problems with her car insurance covering it.

i have had mine since 1991 and never insured it. Think how many new trailers I could have bought with 18 yrs worth of insurance premiums!!
