Is it worth it?

My pony had torn her tendons in one of her back legs badly last year and I am finally riding her but she has had such a set back with all the box rest. She's 11 years old but now acts like a youngster and is very temperamental. One day I can ride her no problem the next day she is rearing and running away from everything. Cantered her today for the first time and her canter is very awkward when I'm on her back but fine when lunged or in the field. I was wondering if it was worth getting some retraining of her to try and improve her paces and try and get her to calm down. I haven't ridden for 3/4 of a year, since she injured herself so when she plays up I can't really cope. We're going to have some lessons but her paces are all over the place and I'm too young to really do much training myself. Any suggestions would be much appreciated

Is she sound? Does she have a sore back? Does her saddle fit correctly? Have her teeth been seen to in the last year? SO many things can influence a pony's way of going, so make sure you investigate every avenue before assuming it's a ridden problem - if it is ridden, a good few lessons should help. Don't doubt yourself, with correct instruction, you can train her

Yes def def def get her back checked by a physio - as shes had a soundness problem with a sore leg she will have compensated by changing her stance and may have put her muscles out of place - this happened with Rock and he was only lame for 2weeks with an abscess yet his back was very uneven when physio came after this

I agree with Gabby. Monty, my rescue who is 20 was having similar probs after one of his back tendons went. Tried him a few months ago and he broke out into the most awful sweat. His back was done last weekend by physio and he was possibly the worst case she had seen! Rotated pelvis one side and a twist the other, S shaped spine and awful tension in the neck, due to him compensating for tendon (plus 20 years of prior sh!te before I knew him).

I am now working him for 20 mins, 5 days a week just at the walk and he is loving it! (no sweat)

As your pony has been out of work for about a year her shape will have changed due to muscle loss so if I was you I would get a qualified saddler out and get your saddle checked. Also have a physio out to give her a once over and a dentist to check her teeth.

Ideally you should have your horses saddle and teeth checked every 6-12 months.

Also have some good quality lessons

Again, would recomend getting his back checked. All that box rest is likely to have given him a sore back. Pony up my yard was on box rest for 6 months with bad hock and had a routine back check afterwards and was quite sore.

yes I was thinking of getting a physio out to see her and the dentist is coming as well to have her regular check up. Another thing she has this thing about not picking up one hoof. The others she picks up immediatly but one of the front hooves she will not pick up for about five minutes of arguing and then when you have it she hops around. I thought maybe it was sore but the vets couldn't find a problem, it might just be stubborness and people say I should give her a hard smack and she won't do it but she's been through a lot and she's head shy and when other people have smacked her she slams them against the wall. I normally say "no" in a firm voice as she hates any raised voice/shouting and if someone hits her she rolls her eyes and jerks her head up and tries to break free. Does anyone have any advice on that either?
Thanks

Might well be part of the same problem - if her back is hurting or muscles are hurting she could be sore on one particular leg - perhaps the one she has been compensating with by putting more weight on it? Get physio asap i wouldnt be at all surprised if she has a problem somewhere, keep us updated xx
