Is my 7.5t horsebox HGV or non HGV ?? help

Ok as the title says really.

I am very confused. I have a Ford Cargo 7.5t Horsebox, on the log book it says 'Private HGV' but I bought it as a non HGV and when I compare it to other 7.5t Ford Cargos on the interenet they all say 'non HGV'

Can someone kindly explain the difference? I have spoke to DVLA who have confirmed it is a private HGV so why do all the other advertisements say non HGV for the 7.5t Cargos????
 
because it is a non hgv in the sense as long as you got your driving licence before 1997 anyone can drive it where as if an hgv so over 7.5 ton you will have to have a class 2 or above which you would have to take a test for
 
Ahhh so when people advertise their boxes as non HGV what they really mean is 'can be driven on a normal licence prior to 97'

I am just going through a dispute with a lady I have actually sold this box to and I had advertised it as "non HGV, can be driven on a normal license" which is true, however she is saying the advert is not as describe because I’ve said non HGV when it says on the log book 'Private HGV' and she now wants her money back :(
 
It has been sold correctly so stand your ground, they changed from non HGV to private HGV several years ago, anything at that weight will now be private HGV for tax purposes.
 
Private HGV (LGV) can be anything over 3.5 tonnes

They are using old terminology because there is no more HGV, only LGV since 1991

My guess is that logbook is pre 1991 ?

The lady is correct in saying that you misrepresented the licence conditions

An ordinary licence is deemed to be a B licence (car only) by the greater majority of people

Therefore the lady thought that the vehicle could be driven on a car licence like a 3.5 tonne horsebox

ADVICE - always advertise a vehicle with its GVW which in this case would be 7.5 tonnes and if you want to state the licence required then check the Govt site for which it is - in this case its LGV C1
 
yes the log book is pre 91 - so is my horsebox HGV or not - still confused (sorry) or is it a LGV. Lots of 7.5t horseboxes are being sold as non HGV so is everyone misrepresenting? I said the horsebox can be driven on a normal license in the advert because it can.

I did advertise the vehicle with its GVW. The advert said this exactly
"FORD CARGO HORSEBOX 7.5T NON HGV CAN BE DRIVEN ON A NORMAL LICENSE" now she wants her money back because the log book states it is a private HGV - arggg very stressed lol
 
Probably shouldn't have mentioned it could be driven on a normal car licence as that would only be correct for people who passed their test before 1997 I believe. However, she should have known what her licence allows her to drive and most people know you can't drive them on a 'normal' car licence that was obtained post 1997.

Maybe just check with her the specifics as to what licence she has/what licence the person(s) intended to drive the box have.

I still call them non-HGV to be honest but then old habits are difficult to get rid of!

As ROG said anything over 3.5 ton is HGV and needs a pre 97 driving licence, or a lorry licence C1, you were correct in your discription apart from maybe should
have said pre 97 car licence!! I take it she has just realised she hasen't got the right licence to drive anything bigger than 3.5 and is looking for a way out of the deal ????

Both parties are responsible for the current situation

The seller for using HGV instead of LGV and for using the term normal licence

The buyer for not checking that their licence covered 7.5 tonnes

The correct advert for all would be something like ...

"FORD CARGO HORSEBOX 7.5 TONNE CAN BE DRIVEN ON LGV C1 LICENCE"
