Hi all, I'm new on here. after reading the thread on current horse prices it makes sense why there apperars to be no suitable horses on the market. My budget must be too small! Ideally I would like to be competing BS/BE upto a meter however I have the experience and desire to go further but I can't afford it. The budget is 3K and I'm looking for something between 14.2-15.2 (I'm 5'4), not to fussed on age but ideally no veterans. What can I expect to get for my money if not that? I thought about the possibility of bringing on a 5/6 year old or even something around 10 with low milage but it seems I'm looking for the impossible because anything thats within my price range and can jump seems to either be wild or nasty. Have thought about loaning but again there dosen't seem to be any around the south west, despite students going off to uni. Any advice appreciated, thanks in advance. :o

i don't think you'll get anything under 12, that is being ridden and not too far of BS/BE, and is also not a nutter.

But you may find something that is looking for a quieter life, i.e stepping down a level, but still has miles to teach you the ropes, it may not pass a vetting and will probably be about 15.

Or you could get something fairly nice but completely green, most likely un broken, probably irish

or you may get a run of the mill RC horse with limited ability above 90cm

its tough but you may find the perfect horse if you look hard and long enough!

As a comparison last year i bought a nice honest 4yo, just sat on, ISHxHann, no mileage what so ever for £3.5k, my friend bought similar from irish horse imports for £3.8k

Thanks so much leanne, confirms my thoughts. Will keep on the look out and hopefully something cheaper may come up because of costs/time keeping them through winter.

I would say you need to double your budget to get anything without problems or soundness issues unless you're very very lucky.

I've just spent £5k on a nice 6 year old 14.2 no record but good jump. She was on the more reasonable end as she was from a friend I'll expect to get double back when my daughters outgrown her and a nice record behind her. We do bs and PC.

No your budget is no where near realistic unless you are willing to consider a biggish 'if' or 'but'

On 3K you could hop over to Ireland and take a gamble on a 3yo

You might find a NF or welsh D capable of that within your budget but would think you'd have to take a punt and go on breeding not competition record as anything proven will be far more. There's a stunning Hackney/Welsh D on NFED within your budget but advert is strangely worded!

I paid 4.5k for a 4yo two years ago with no record but will certainly work up to that level.

If your brave I would consider the Ireland thing (I would recommend speaking to Kevin Reilly if you fancy a nice connie)

Thanks all for your comments. Dont have the time to back/bring on a youngster so I will be on the look out, it may be a long search, i have an open mind about the oldies. Not surprised these sorts are so expensive, they're in high demand and it takes alot of time/effort to produce them. I'm only looking to have said horse for a 18-24 months so im also entertaining the possibility of leasing. i know there is a family near me that lease eventing school masters/green ones to bring up to the ranks so will investigate that. Anybody had experience leasing? Dont want to take the gamble in ireland.

IMO your budget is way too small for anything that is proven, sound and straight forwards with no ifs or buts in any of the phases. IME it is older horses at a much higher level that get leased. Having said that, you may be lucky and find something but do you have any idea as to what the monthly payments may be plus the legal contract you will be required to sign? It may make your eyes water.

Even with winter approaching your budget appears unreasonable, sane, genuine, without major quirks and with ability to go to the level you want will be much more unless you are incredibly lucky.
