I have had him for 6 years,he has always been very vocal(purring, meowing and wailing/yodeling)but in the past 3 months he has become A LOT noisier. His latest thing is to run around the house wailing mornfully. Its not normal noise, and has been described as extreme vocalisation. There are no dietry or routine changes, and he seems happy enough in other ways, but i cant help wondering if this could be related to something serious. He will be going to see the vet anyway, and was wondering if anybody had any ideas/suggested questions or tests? Thanks for reading!

Has any new felines moved in near your home? could be him just trying to be the "topcat".
If hes not changing behaviour ie-weeing in house, off his food or aggressive with anyone in the house could be that hes getting more attention for been louder and you fell for it?:o
Also for past few months have you had friends or family over for christmas? he could be competing (in his eyes) for attention?

Other option and have seen this with an elderly neighbor so dont be offended(you might be?) cat got louder as her hearing aid ran out of batteries:o:rolleyes:

but no harm getting him checked at vets-for his hearing possibly?
good luck let us know what happens x

This is often a symptom of thyroid deficiency. Vet can do a simple blood test to check this and if it is the problem, 1 teeny tablet a day for life should sort it.

Agree with this certainly get him checked out, but if thats all clear might be worth trying a ferreway ( excuse spelling) Plug in or cat nip toys can sometimes help, certainly chills my guy out when we go away.

Thanks everyone for your replies,it's definately food for thought.Millyard Rejects,Im not at all offended, and will have the vet check his ears in case he doesnt realise how loud he is,I dont think the wailing is to get my attention,he usually runs out of the room Im in to make noise in the hall!Box-Of-Frogs,I will get his blood tested,as the thyroid function does seem a likely cause(I googled it),thanks for that suggetion. He really is an odd cat, doesnt much like outside or private "cat time" ,so hopefully the vet can make him a bit happier(and quieter):)

My cat does this alot but he is deaf, I dont think he knows he is making such a loud noise.

Its sometimes so loud when I go out that he can be heard outside and the man in the shop nextdoor to my house (and his dog) can hear him, they were worried what it was so had to ask me if everything was ok!!

If he's getting older it may be that his hearing is deteriorating . Hope he is ok.

not thyroid deficiency. it's a symptom of an overactive thyroid.

can also be senility in some cats. Feliway can sometimes help. Vet best person to advise though.
