Can anyone tell me if my foal is likely to be regarded as coloured? Sire is coloured. He is bay with 4 white socks and a blaze. He also has a white patch on underside about the size of a palm though it will grow with him I guess. His jaw is mainly white with a largely pink lower lip.

i think the rules for both Chaps and the BSPA are the white has to be above the point of Elbow and stifle but I would get your foal tested as its more then likely a minimal Tobiano or if the sire or dam carry Sabino it could be a sabino marking which may or may not be SB1 we have a pure TB mare here at stud and she has a 12inch by 12in white tummy but she is not Tobiano and not Sabino. good luck he sounds very sabino to me what breed are they? and what is the dam?

Doesn't sound like it - from CHAPS site:

"The definition of a “coloured” animal is black and white (piebald) or white and any other colour, e.g, bay, roan, chestnut (skewbald) with a patch of naturally occuring white coat. This white patch must be on the body above the level of the stifle or elbow, excluding face markings. Any white marking below this does not qualify."

Thanks for this. I do have photos on file but not sure how to upload on this site - it asks for a url which my photos don't have. how do you get round that?

I think each Association has it's own ideas of 'coloured' The American Paint Horse Association deems a paint to be at least a 2" x 2" white on the body somewhere (legs, blazes not counting) Very minimal, then they can be registered as a Paint.

Thank you for helping. I still can't get it to produce a picture or an easy link but I'm persevering. That post you recommended was excellent

I'm sending another photo which might show his patch more clearly [image]<a href="http://s620.photobucket.com/albums/tt284/daisalph/?action=view&current=IMG_3409.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i620.photobucket.com/albums/tt284/daisalph/IMG_3409.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>[/image]

Looking at mum and looking at the patch he seems to be a Sabino/ overo, I would say looking at your foal he will be a bay sabino, he looks as if he has white foot does he have spotting on his chin and lips? the thing to do is take more photos when his foal coat gone then you will be sure how clean the patten is for more formal identification.

I agree it looks very much like sabino and the dam is minimally marked, Sabino can crop out from minimal markings to a belly splash in offspring, the TB Pancake comes to mind.

American paints have a special breeding stock register for non coloured offspring and the line is bluring now between paints and QH's with louder markings being allowed onto the QH register.

NB testing for Sabino 1 has drawn a blank in clydesdales and arabs so the test can be misleading if your horse has another type of sabino. Roan, Tobiano, Overo and sabino are all found on the same genetic locus.

Interesting. He could be a bay a sabino, a minimal tobiano or even a paint! I will see how the white patch develops though it is definitely pink skin underneath like his socks and blaze. He also has a mainly white muzzle. Whatever, he's gorgeous and I'll probably show him though I don't know what as yet!
I'll have another try with an image. [image][/image]

Sorry in a hurry but is his father coloured or does he have any coloured relatives or offspring? What are his fathers white markings? If they are minimal too and mum's parents/ grandparents are not coloured then I would put money on sabino.

This is my Sabino TB mare we think she may be splash overo but you can not test for this yet, we have tested her for sabino 1 and frame overo both results came back negative but there are many sabino variants

She would qualify as a coloured horse.

The two coloured in my sig (the one eventing and the foal) are by Masterpiece. I would get him DNA tested, its very cheap and easy and def worth it before you register him.

I got a couple of yearlings by Masterpiece!

CF I spoke to Chris a couple of days ago and you'll be pleased to hear that Masterpiece is making good progress in his recovery from the colic op and they are very hopeful, he said it was touch and go for awhile tho!

Teddy is a bay, with blaze, four white socks and a belly splash... no coloured parents tho, so its just a belly splash

I have a stunning coloured colt by him (Teddy) tho out of my coloured mare, he's gorgeous!!

Glad to hear it Teffy, he is such a lovely horse, I am sure all the vets and staff there would have been devistated if he hadnt pulled through, along with his owners of course!

Ah Masterpiece in that case I would say a minimal Tobiano possibly sabino as well. I remember riding a son of his dam sire Master Spiritus years ago a bright bay with a lot of sabino.
